"Competition Limited" Headlamp Installation

1989-1993 Thunderbird/Cougar

The Competition Limited 9005/6 Head Lamp kit is designed for cars with the 4 bulb headlamp system (2 low beams/2 high beams). The Ford OEM 4 bulb headlamp system is designed so that when the two high beams come on the two low beams go off. Ford's origional equipment uses low beams (9006s) which produce 55 watts of light each, and the high beams (9005s) produce 65 watts of light each. This produces a total of 110 watts of light in the low beam mode and 130 watts of light in the high beam mode. The Competition Limited 9005/6 Head Lamp kit is designed to allow all 4 bulbs to come on when the high beams are selected. (Using 2 - 80w low bulbs and 2 - 100w high bulbs producing a total of 360 watts of light!)

1994-1997 Thunderbird/Cougar

The Competition Limited 9007 Head Lamp kit is designed for cars with the 2 bulb headlamp system. The Ford OEM system uses two 9700 bulbs which produce 55 watts of light each in low beam mode, and 65 watts of light each in high beam mode. This produces a total of 110 watts of light in the low beam mode and 130 watts of light in the high beam mode. (Using Competition Limited 2 - 80/100w bulbs will produce 160 watts on low beams and 200 watts on high beams!)

To provide for this increased wattage Competition Limited has developed a wiring harness using 14 gauge wire, 2 - 30 amp relays, and a pair of 20 amp fuseible links which connect directly to your battery. Only a few amps are require from your stock electrical system to "trigger" the relays which turn on the bulbs. Headlamp function will not be effected by use of the harness and your lights will operated normally including cars equiped with the Ford Autolamp.

Note: Before installation begins get 6 feet of 1/2" black plastic wire loom. Available at most parts houses and electrical stores. Tools needed are wire cutters, electrical tape, plyers, various sockets and wrenches.

Installation instructions:

Begin installation by disconnecting the positive battery terminal.

Lay the harness across the front of your engine compartment, with the red power connectors (fusible links) and the relay sockets nearest the battery. Note: The blue plugs (low beams) and the black plugs (high beams) on the 9005/6 kit.

Unplug and remove your stock headlamp bulbs (see picture). (Note: The high and low beams have distinctive grooves so you can't get them mixed up)

Install the new bulbs (do not touch the bulbs with your finger!) To clean bulbs use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth.

Next remove the two bolts that attach the radiator to the cars frame and using the 1/2" black wire loom cover the Competition Limited wiring harness. (see picture)

Run the wire loom in front of the radiator and mount the relays in front of the battery. Tap directly into the battery supply using the MEGA FUSE post (see pictures).

Then ground the wiring harness using the 2 black wires to the frame (see picture).

Next run the wire loom around the battery box (see picture)

Next reattach the radiator and install the battery. Turn your headlights on and test the low and high beams. Installation is complete! Always refer to the instructions that come with your wiring kit.
