Well I brought my 1991 N/A V6 out to Maryland International Raceway to make a few passes in my Underbird and it turned out to be a good night of racing. I don't know what I was thinking that night though....thought I could break into the 16's lol Maybe I'll get there at Summer Blast... I did improve with each run... even beat one of those new turbo BMW's to the 60' mark lol (He did better later though, lol) Anyway..... here is 1st run and my quickest run of the night.

R/T : .527 (Been awhile since I've been to the track...father told me no excuses lol)
60' : 2.522
1/8 : 11.510
mph : 61.11
1/4 : 17.911
mph : 76.78 This run was with 255/55/16's stock tire pressure, short burn out and leaving at ???RPM (No tach) lol

Best run of the night(4 runs later, no burnout)
R/T: .142
60' : 2.455
1/8 : 11.325
mph : 61.96
1/4 : 17.645
mph: 77.61 Was a little cooler when I made this run...waited 20mins or so till my next run but ran a little slower.
I hope to get her down to the 16's and then I will be happy. She's a DD and I know it would take A LOT of cash to make her fast. That's why I have the SC to play with :D Congrats to Chris Vinning and his father Sherman for running great times in their Marauder! God I want that car.

Id like to see what those times look like with a manual trans, or decent gearing. The AOD 1st gear is like 2nd gear on my M5OD and TR3650, the car is basically starting out in 2nd gear...

40MPH+ acceleration is really not bad, and top end isnt much different than the 5.0 'birds. My car doesnt have a limiter on it and I have seen 120MPH+. The V6 Thunderbirds are only really slow 0-30...

Its all about having a good time with your car. I used to do 17.6 @ 78MPH in my Vulcan powered Mercury Sable.

I never have taken out my 89 Cougar LS to the track, but I did take my 2000 Grand Marquis, and <begin excuses here> even at 2600 feet wasn't much faster than your times. I would BARELY be able to get up to get a ticket on the interstate speed in a quarter mile. I also wasn't there with a trailer or another car, so I had the cooler full of soda and dinner in the trunk, and forgot to remove things like the kids car seats. It was a blast, and that is all that mattered, and finding out what it would do. I didn't expect it to be fast, 2.73 gears, lazy tuning, and left traction control on for one run, that added 1.5 seconds to the time. My daughter was in the stands and laughing harder than everyone else commenting on the grandma mobile lumbering down the track.

With my 97 Cougar with the 4.6 I barely was beating the stripped and "fast and furioused" fox 5.0 mustangs, or the 05+ V6 (this was before the 2010 V6 Mustangs). I had a good time, caught the bug, but not enough to actually try to improve my car with some simple and cheap upgrades.

I would LOVE to drop a 5-speed in! I think 3:73 gears would wake the car up....no idea what gears are in there right now. My future mod's for the car right now are gears, intake tube, bump up the timing and finish my exhaust(cat-back)
I have a 2001 ford windstar that's totaled in the rear, anybody know if I can use anything from the engine? I was thinking that maybe I could use the TB or MAF?

Did you modify your headlights to light up like that with the high beams?

You've most likely got a 3.27 open rear.

I don't know the interchangeability between years, but the splitport swap is probably the best thing you can do to the 3.8 short of adding boost. IIRC it involves swapping over the top end of the engine; heads up.

Not sure what you meant Raptor22..... I had my low beams on at the track and my headlights are stock except for the bulbs....or am I missing something that I should know about my own car? lol I doubt the guy before me did anything.
I'm doing a little research on the splitport swap but won't happen till next summer I'm sure.

All four of your headlights are lit up, mine only illuminate the inner two or the outer two at the same time. I always wanted all four of mine to light up.

Hmmmm..... maybe the '89-90's are different? I'm pretty sure the guy who owned my bird before(I'm the 2nd owner) me did not do anthing to the bird. Maybe somebody will chime in about this? I would like to do HID'S and also make all my brake lights light up using LEDS. I found a LED strip that might work for the piece above the license plate...would love to have work like the '95+ birds. I know it's just a V6 bird but I still want to modify it....I would like to see 15sec times without a power adder. I know it will take a lot of mods but how many N/A birds/Cougars do you see that run 15's/16's? My father had a '95 V8 bird and I ran a 14.80....my '89 Probe GT ran 14.30's and my '89 Mustang Gt ran 12.70's... My stock SC might break 15's(orig. headgaskets 196K on the motor) I know I could just drop a 5.0 in it but now I'm just wondering how fast I can get this V6 to go. It's fun being different:D I think if I do 3:73 gears, bump up the timing, finish my exhaust(cat-back) TB.MAF, skinnys on the front with drag radials on the rear I could run mid
16's...hell I could take out the rear seat and pass. seat. Doubt I will go that far but I did strip my Probe GT(Headliner,carpet,PS,A/C amd used 13Ib wheels from an Mazda Rx-7) which really helped. After work tomorrow I'm going to be taking parts off a 2001 Windstar and who know when I will be able to put them in the bird.

Sweet dude, as a V6 'bird owner I totally agree with you. I've put way more money into this car than I ever should have sensibly haha...

Like CometGSR said... " It's all about having a good time with your car". Hell, my suspension mod's are worth more than my car lol. I know the Underbird is my daily driver but I really want to see if I can get 15's maybe 14's but right now 16's is my goal. I've had car's that ran low 15's and low 12's... so trying to make a VERY slow car run 15-16's in the 1/4 would still be great. It seem's like most V6 owners are building '96+ birds and then there are what, a handfull of us with the early V6's. Does anybody know what the fastest time for a '89-'93 N/A V6 bird is? I love turbo's and would be nice to add one to the bird but thats way down the road since I'm also working on my '89 SC but I still plan to slowly build my '91 V6.
Anybody watch the video of me racing the white turbo BMW? lol Think he needs more seat time at the track ;) He was the only guy I beat off the line that night....kept getting really fast cars next to me  tried to pull up next to slow cars like mine but just did not happen.

So I took the Underbird to the Summer Blast meet in WVA this past weekend and had a blast! We had a VERY good turn out and the whole event was just awesome. This was my first time attending this and I will be going next year for sure so if you have not gone to this event before....you HAVE to go! One of my favorite moments of the meet was the police escort to the car show Saturday...seeing a bunch of birds/cougars and a few other fords in the rear view mirror was just awesome! Anyway...... the Underbird now has a new best time of [email protected] I made a few runs using skinnys up front and Chris V. bumped up the timing 10deg. (I also had help from Karen....helped me drain a good amount of water from my trunk lol ) I was told that the times I ran at Mason Dixon were very good and I'm guessing when I go back to Maryland International Raceway my times should be lower. I can't wait till next Friday to see what the car will do. I'm still shooting for 16's lol. I want to thank everybody who helped me at the track and for not busting my chops for racing a basicly stock '91 N/A V6 bird. I really want to set some kind of record for having a basically stock '91 bird and I think I can do this with the help of all the members of TCCOA! Also...cong rats to all that received awards during the Summer Blast event. If there was a P.O.S award I might have got an award lol. I can't wait till next year.

I'd bet your car would do pretty decent at road racing. :)

I admire your efforts with a slow car like mine, good luck making it fast. I have heard from a couple people on this board that my car seems faster than their 3.8L 'birds so I'd like to actually try mine out sometime when its fixed. :)

Looks like a lot of fun. I've never ran my Bird but have been thinking of taking it to the midnight drags just to see what it would do. Mine is a 3.8L N/A also with mostly suspension mods. Like Raptor I also put more money into the car as was wise but I've drove it many many miles and had a lot of fun in it. Overall I've put over 200k miles on it myself but just had the motor rebuilt so I'm ready for another 200k.

Yeah the Underbird handles VERY well and I plan to take it to the road course just not sure when.... right now I just want to break into the 16's and I know with the help of a few members that are local to me I could do it. I have had a few people tell me that it's a waste of money to build this car like I have but you know what, I know I could just buy another bird or do a motor swap....but how many '89 to '93 bird members run 15's/16's using the stock engine with little mod's? I also get comments like..."You have a SC so why not build that?" My answer to that is that I want to be DIFFERENT! It's the Underbird and I know I can make it run 16's or even 15's with little money. I'm just having fun building this car up till I can fix my brakes on my '89 SC. I plan on buying a '97 V6 engine from a member here and building that up but right now let's see just how fast this bird will go with the stock engine :) Oh, BlueEyes....take that bird out to the track and see what she will do! I still want to hear from other '89-'93 NA V6 bird owners so I have something to compare my car with so post your 1/8 or 1/4mile times PLEASE! I have seen '94+NA V6 times but want to hear from the early birds.

Haha, I have a 2004 Mustang GT and people ask me the exact same thing, "why are you putting money into this bucket when you have a Mustang!?" Its because I like to be different too. :)

Gotta be different and make your car your own....I've owned a few mustangs and the mods I did were pretty much like everybody else. I've been talking to my friend Turbo Dave and he said when I have the cash he can turbo my '91 bird.....he's turbo'd more then 40+ cars/trucks and is very well known in the area. He is also a founding member of the Merkur club and knows A LOT about turbocharging car's that are hard to add a turbo....he looked at my bird a few months ago and said... "Eh, gonna be a pain but I can do it". I wonder how many people on here would be interested in a group buy for a turbo kit....V6 or V8...he does it all. If anybody want's to see his work just PM me and I can give you the link to his website(It's been a long time since he has updated it but you can still see what he's done) I love his '94 4cyl. Ford ranger that has a big turbo, mac truck I/C and runs 11's or 12's I think. He's had 13 cars in his stable at one time before...not sure what the count is now but they are all ford/mercury and he's just a all around nice guy willing to help anybody.
