So I've been looking at some TSBs from Ford, and they all specifically say
1. Mercon and Mercon V are NOT interchangable.
2. Mercon V should NOT be used where Mercon is specified for use.
3. All 4R70W's before 1998 should use Mercon and not Mercon V.

I've got Mercon V, and haven't done the J-Mod yet. What gives?

Ford issued a series of conflicting statements... but Mercon V was developed specifically to help address the TC shuddering issues in trannies like ours. There are no differences between 98+ and pre98 cars that render it unusable in an older 4R70W. ALL AODs, AODEs, and 4R70W's should use Mercon V.

yeah the tranny shop told me that they the problems they were having with mine was because of the mercon V and they called the assoc of automatic transmissions or some bull **** thing i cant remember and they agreed that the mercon V was the problem.

i kept tryin to tell them BS but they wouldnt waranty their work with mercon v. ***holes. Who you gonna believe some assoc that reverse engineers the dang tranny or the guy who designed it.

I put M.V in my 95 and so far its been great! I swear its smoother since I changed it too! Could just be in my head though... Either way its working great for me so I say go 4 it!

I think my tranny and TC took like 12 litres! It's expensive too... but worth it if your TC is shuddering.

well, it should take 12 litres and I think a litre is a bit more than a quart... at least it is up here! I know there is a US quart and a Canadian quart??

WTF like we need different quarts? Lol, lets fight for the right... quart!

Well 14 US quarts is way too much unless you have transmission lines ran all over the car for some odd reason.

Our '94 had the shutter problem and i went and bought 13 quarts of Ford mercon V, flushed trans, refilled, installed new filter, and the trans is like new. It took a few days for the fluid to work, and the trans operates perfect.

The Mercon V should work fine but according to the service bulletin I was shown there is a compatability problem with the type of rubber used in older trannys seals and mercon V. It should work fine until the seals start leaking though.

yes there are rumors about this.. but we have it right from the source that this is not an issue in our cars. ALL AODs, AODEs, and 4R70W's can and should use Mercon V.

Page 5 of the OD 101 tranny article if anyone is interested.

Use the Mercon V, period.

I did the JMod to the valve body and added a transmission cooler. In all, it took 12.5 quarts of Mercon V. I had a bit of shudder before the Mercon V and JMod, but none since. I've done everything but mountain driving and drag racing with the transmission and no problems. That was 11,000 miles ago. This is not an ancedote, just fact.

plus, you can't blame any professional shop for going against what Ford says. We may all know it's okay to use but any average mechanic looking it up or asking Ford would have to say it's NOT interchangable. My mechanic was even boggled when I said to use the 100 dollor fluid over the 20 dollor (for 12 litres) generic Mercon! I use Synthetic oil also, Mobil1 to be exact and they also wonder why I buy 35 dollor oil over 10 dollor oil! The way I see it is that it's worth the extra money if it's any bit good for my engine over time. But they just want me to save lots of money I guess.

I just replaced my trans filter, and refilled with 6 qts of M-V. Works great. Also, let me say that leaking will be...difficult. That I tried to make a small hole in it, as it did not line up. Even with a drill, it was close to impossible. However, it is not impossible. Just my two cents.
