Hey guys!
Sorry for the NEWB post but I just want to make sure that I have my information right. Would the stock transmission be a 4r70w? If it's not going in the forward gears, what would be some trouble shooting to do before jut replacing the whole thing? Also, where are some good sources for a used/refurbished 4r70w?

Thanks
Ben

Yes, you have a 4R70W. As far as not engaging gears, have you checked the fluid level?

As far as a direct replacement I believe you can only go as high as a 98 trans before you have to re-pin the harness to make a 99+ work correctly.

If it were mine, I would find a low mileage takeout from any 99+ Mustang, Explorer, Crown Vic or Grand Marquis and just repin the harness. The newer years had some hardware updates that make them better than the stock 94.

The only issue w/ using a CV trans. is you have to make sure it doesn't have the extended tailshaft used on Police cars. As far as I know the civillian model will work.

Then fill with Mercon V fluid and call it a day. By the way, is your bird a V6 or V8?

The only truly direct replacement is a 94/95 trans. 96-98 doesn't require repinning of the harness, but you must swap the MLPS and TCC solenoid. 99+ requires either repinning the harness (and still swapping the above items) or just swapping the entire harness inside the trans.

As stated, check the fluid first. If the fluid is fine and you can't move at all (not even in 2nd gear) then the trans is toast.

98 does require repinning the harness by the way guys. That is the first year of the new style electronics.
