While it is easier to replace the shifter with the VB out, I have done them without removing the VB. Also FYI it appears Ford is only making the stronger gearsets in at least the 04+ trannies... Dan Newman told me the OEM stuff we have was phased out, so even the new GT trannies should be real strong. And yes I've seen the 23 tooth white speedo gears, they're real thin and I've seen them just chewed up - so if you get one don't expect it to live forever. I'm kind of surprised my 21 tooth gear is working without a hitch this long, I've heard some short life stories of those too.
Also as an FYI I retained the mustang shifter and modified the cable attachment point and bracket without any issue. Much easier in my opinion but definitely not stock

There are two gears one internal to the tranny and one that it drives clipped on to the vehicle speed sensor which you will be swapping from your current trans to your new one. Dan can be reached at Joe Cooper Ford either look on the front page or the business card in JL's post in this thread.

Yes you do. No complication just one bolt and trim a little plastic around the connector

what about the shift solenoids, tot solenoid, and epc solenoid

can I use keep the ones in the 2001 tranny there?

Yes to answer your question. Yes you can keep all the other shift solonoids in the 2001 trans.

The electrical resitance is different in the 94-95 TCC and is the only one that will work with the 94-95 EEC. If you had a 96 or 97 Tbird you could keep the 2001 solonoind if I remember corectly. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

No a sloid axle 28 spline unit will not work because there are no grooves for the IRS retainer clips. Not all Tbirds had open rear ends just buy a used one with the trac lock ready to go then all you have to do is swap the complete pumpkin
