Hey, I went to the auto show today. Yesterday and today were auto supplier days or "industry preview" days, so today my company went. This was my first major auto show, so I wasn't too sure on what to expect. There weren't all the hot chicks walking around like I saw in the pictures (I think they save them for the Charity days and public days, and of course they were there for the Media days), and the guys there told me there were only about half as many people there as there usually are (since it was an industry preview day), and that I'd get a good view of everything.

The concept Camaro looks much larger in person, it's really wide and menacing. The Challenger looked as it did in the photos we've probably all seen already, and even though I'm a GM guy I think the Challenger was the best car there. The Caliber didn't look bad, but the Jeep version of it looked wierd in the front, and the automatic had an odd looking shifter. That Kodiak GM truck, it's huge. It's like a Semi (the pictures I'd seen led me to believe it was a large pick-up, but it's really like 9 feet tall). The GTP turbocharged Solstice was cool, but they didn't have the hood up. They did have a cut-away of the engine, which has a ridiculously small turbo (the turbine on the exhaust side was around 1.25-1.5 inches in diameter), I couldn't understand how the engine made 260hp at like 5300 rpm because a turbo that small didn't seem like it would be effective at that high rpm.

If anyone has questions, post them and I'll check this again before bed tonight and again tomorrow and reply. After that it won't matter because anyone can go to the show on Saturday.

Two things about Detroit that I never saw in New York City:
1) people wait for you to get off the train (or People Mover as they called it) before they try to get on the train
2) people don't walk the streets like they do in New York, the streets looked dead, but this was mid-day when we got there

Any advice for those of us going? I'm heading up there next weekend, trying to figure out what to expect.

Any "can't miss" cars (aside from the challenger/camaro, etc.)?

-Nissan X-box car was great
-Jeep's waterfall is a must see
-Mini-Cooper had a cool go-kart that you sit in that's a video game
-that red Honda (fuel cell or hydrogen ICE or something) that's been at the past few shows was there, I thought it looked ugly though
-like 5 civics, if that's your bag
-Aston Martin had some great stuff that you can't get withing 10 feet of
-Jaguar had great stuff too
-I sat in the Mustang, there were 2 Cobra's (I think I sat in the Cobra but I forgot) and you can only sit in one of them
-the 5.4L supercharged engine is on display, there were 2 (one with a larger supercharger than the other, I think one was for the GT one for the Cobra)
-Ford's 3.5L is on display
-the newer 5.4L and 4.6L are on display at several locations, so look at it only once because it's almost the same the next time you see it
-Ford had a huge pickup there with large TV screens, that was great
-GM had that Kodiak truck, just stand next to it and you'll feel like an ant
-2 GT's, that car is like 3 ft. tall...looks real bad-*** in person
-Challenger and Camaro must-see, and you'll have to fight to look at it
-if you're into ricey scions, there's a green/yellow one under blacklights that you'd probably like, I just stared at it like as if a man was on fire (one of those can't look away because it's so hideous things)
-FJ Cruiser, check out the back...for an off-road truck the tail light protrude around 2" from the body (brush guards or a design change will be needed)
-Ferrari had an engine there, very tall intake runners for 8500 rpm peak horsepower
-Solstice GXP or GTP or whatever looks stock for the most part, but the engine is worth a look
-Mercedes has that $450k McLaren with like 650 hp, you can't sit in that one though
-I got to sit in the Porsche Cayman S, that was cool, and the new BMW 3 series, it was an automatic and the button to change gear was on the front of the shifter (not on the side like a T-handle or on top)
-Nissan has like 3 350z's to sit in and a race 350z that was cool
-Buick has a Lucerne or some car that is cut into 6 or 8 pieces and behind glass, you can walk between the car and literally see what's inside
-hardtop 2+2 G6 looked cool
-Saturn Sky looks better than the Solstice in person
-Audi has the V-10 (I think the Lamborghini sourced one) on display, look at where the camshaft is driven from (its in the rear of the motor running off a secondary set of gears, the wierdest set-up for variable timing)
-if you wanna see the Chineese Gleely car, it's outside in the Cobo building (not in the show area) near the hardtop solstice and an orange car that I couldnt' make out from 2 stories above it(if you find out what it is, please tell me)
-watch out for old guys handing out american flags, they'll ask you for money after interrupting your conversation
-I missed the Lamborghini display, most of the Hummer display, all of the Cadillac display and all of downstairs (we were only there for a few hours)

that's all I can think of for now

I was down there earlier this week, and might've been able to bullsh*t my way in with my press credentials, but it was already Industry Day by then. Damn...

how'd you get to go early? which charity shelled out passes for today, or are you lucky?

I work for a major automotive supplier, and that was an "industry preview day." My ticket was purple with a hologram across the top. We also got programs with a coupon (free) but they have a $5 price on them. I just got my tickets for the public today. These are pink. I think tonight is the charity night (black tie, Tuxedo and such). Saturday it opens to the public. This is my first time working for an auto company (Advance Auto Parts does not count, ha ha) and I didn't realize they just give these things to their employees. I'm grateful though, it really made my day.

As far as sneaking in goes, I dunno. They have to wand you with the metal detector then take the stubb or whatever off your ticket.

Nice pics man. I couldn't take my camera because I found out I was leaving literally minutes before we left, and my phone has no camera. I got more tickets for later this week, I'm gonna try to go again with the girlfriend this time.
