the car is a 1994 Lincoln mark 8 with a 1993 mark 8 transmission installed. the 93 transmission has been in the car and shifting fine for 20k miles or so. the serperator plate was rescently drilled to j-mod spec, with all the accumulator springs left in and in stock form to be changed out when a later date comes and an auxilary transmission cooler comes out.

the concern is that the car does not engage 2nd gear at any circumstance. it will tach 1st gear out to high revs under ligh throttle, skip 2nd, and go into 3rd, harder then normal. when manual 2nd is selected, nothing engages, if your going from manaul 1st to manaul 2nd it will stay in first, from drive to manaul 2nd it will stay in the gear the car is already in. all the other gears function normally.

when the shift kit was done the car shifted fine for around 150 miles, then the non exsitant 2nd gear came about. i would hope it is not an issue with the intermediate clutch, and is rather an issure with the vavle body, either with not sealing correctly gasket wise, or some other elusive component failure. also when it was done i removed the plate located on the lower flat piece of the valve body, when mounted up in the car, could that be the culprit of my concern?

the valve body also had to be torqued to 120in-lbs instead of 90 because the torque wrench we used did not go that low, i dont think this would cuase the issues, but its not off the table, im kind of hoping this is the problem and it squeezed the gasket out, and cuased a leak, witch then cuased the no 2nd gear issue

if anyone has any ideas it would be helpful, the transmission level is correct, fluid is clean and unburnt.

any help is apreaciated, the more minds on the job, the quicker it can be diagnosed and fixed...

on a p.s. note, the car only had 7 check balls in the valve body versus 8, when compared to the photos in the tech articles the vavle body in the car had a spot where a check ball was suposed to be, but the valve body did not have the space

ADDED NOTE.. joey left it out.. When cruising in 3rdgear at 30mph and manualy downshifting to 2nd.. it goes into Neutral.. if im on the highway and wanna open it up while im going 60 i feel it kick down (( to second)) but the car responds like i put it in neutral and tachs out.. if i ease back off the throttle it shifts back to third and overdrive

After talking to Brian today and reading this post, I have to say tear it down and investigate.

Couple oddities...

...the car shifted fine for around 150 miles, then the non exsitant 2nd gear came about. That's probably good news. It at least means the tranny did function after the work was performed but something happened afterwards.

...the car only had 7 check balls in the valve body versus 8... I have to wonder what valve body this is. It may have been jerry-rigged before.

...the valve body also had to be torqued to 120in-lbs instead of 90... Definitely a concern. The valve bodies do not respond well to improper torque issues, so any overtorque would be a concern in my mind.

At a minimum I would tear it down and reinstall with new gaskets and proper bolt torque. Were the new gaskets the same as the old?

well since the valve body wasnt the same then i doubt the gasket are going to line up and do there job rite, unless u go out and get the gaskets for that trans ,and not the ones listed for the j-mod.do ya still have the old gaskets?
they should have the ford part number on them still.did the new gaskets line up to the old seperater plate?
