a friend of mine has about 10k miles on these gears but wants to put 3.73s. the ring i know will fit bc its from another 8.8 rear end but will the pinoin have the same spline count? he has a 2002 f150 w/ 5.4.

Going from 3.55s to 3.73s really isn't worth the time to do even if the gears are free. Just my opinion.

You can probably get another yoke if the splines are wrong.

Yes going from 3.55 to 3.73 is almost pointless, but this guy isn't the one spending the money now is he. :D What is your stock gear? If it's 3.08, it might be worth yuor time and money to have this researched a little further, but if you've got the 3.27s like I do, you won't notice much of a difference from what various guys here have told me. I just plan on keeping my 3.27s personally.

YOull need to change both the ring and pinion, diff gear ratio, diffrent # of teeth on the ring and pinion. Id couble check the axle tag to make sure its not a 9.75 rearend
