So what are some popular engine issues with the 3.8 motor over time?

Where to begin?
Harmonic balancers like so snap off on the supercharged models, not sure if this is a problem on NA motors
Ignition modules- all 80's-90's Ford's tend to have this problem though

96+ 3.8s have most of the above issues fixed. Other than that they're just anemic turds
Now, now. They run pretty good for a V8 with two cylinders missing :diablo:

It's a co-workers bird, she has a what I believe to be a 96 3.8L red bird. She can't get it out of park sometimes (I suspect neutral safety position switch)

Neutral safety switch would prevent the car from starting ... unless the shifter linkage is mis-aligned. I would be going down a different diagnostics route. Of course your statement is somewhat vague, getting the car "out of park" sounds like the interlock switch that prevents you from moving the shifter without the key in the ignition ...

Sorry I was tired when I posted this, it couldn't be the neutral safety switch...derp...the car wouldn't start...period. I believe it's the shift interlock solenoid as well, where is it located?

It could still start in Neutral if the park portion of the MLPS were not functioning ..

The Shift interlock solenoid is located above the steering column, need to remove the shroud to access it .. do the brake lights work ? It is activated by the brake switch.

i had this happen to my 90 once as well, turned out the brake light switch on the pedal failed. i would definitely check to make sure the brake lights come on before you start tearing into things. that switch on the pedal is supper easy to change. i had to yank one off a mustang at the salvage yard i was working for at the time just so i could get home!

always hated that whole foot on the brake to start thing. couldn't figure out how to get out of the driveway back when i first started driving :D
