PJ-4.2L did the swap this past spring. Not exactly a direct bolt in but close enough. The motor bolts up to the tranny no problem. The engine accessories all bolt up. The 4.2 upper intake is taller so there will be clearance problems with the hood. You can use a 99+ Mustang upper. Also will need a 2001 Mustang oil pan. Exhaust bolts up too. You might have to lenghten a few sensor connections. Can't think of anything else right now, hope this helps.

wasnt P-j gonna do a step by step instruction manual.

for us 3.8er's b/c im very interested on knowing how this is done, b/c my 3.8 is still running strong but its having a lot of temp problems so i know that sooner or later my headgaskets are going to take a crap for the 2nd time. Might as well be prepared right?????? I think this would be a really good idea to put an article about this 4.2 swap on this board. Hey the 4.6 guys have a bunch of peformance articles like the 5.4 swap and stuff like that, why cant we 3.8er's have articles also right?????
We 3.8s need performance help too.

Time, time, time.......

This all takes time. I know he moved to California not too long ago, so I'm sure he's settling in and getting his new life together. And he probably has other interests going on too besides the T-Bird. I'm sure when he's ready he'll get it done. :)

We got a 98 F150 4X4 as a work truck a few days ago. I was surprised at the difference in the power between the 3.8 and the 4.2. Plus you have to figure it is in a heavy truck too. So the power would be a great change in the tibird That has made me want on even more. i have been junk yard hunting but no luck yet.

Also found out that no matter how stong the six cylinder is you cant get a 4X4 out of 4 feet of mud. Try telling the boss that you got his truck stuck.

Basic specs.
OUR 3.8L
-140hp
-215tq
The 4.2L truck engine
-208hp
-250tq

So 68hp and 35tq gain bay swaping to the 4.2L engine.

quite a bit less, its a Iron block with Aluminum heads, probibly 100+ lbs. lighter. (V6 Birds are 175-250lbs. lighter than V8's depending on the year)

Very cool. If I didn't really want to have a 302 I would be running for a 4.2L right now.

Yeah only not so much... THe stock 302 had like 255 or 250 ft/lbs of tourque. That 4.2 is a mean little engine. I still love my 302 though... :headbang:

Guess what guys I might be the second person to actually have the 4.2. For some reason this owner of a new speed shop is dead set on getting my engine. So i told him u trade me a 4.2 and install it then u can have my engine. He is looking for a 4.2 as we speak. I hope it pans out. It will be professionally installed and I don't have to get my car port all dirty. LOL. I will find out in the next few days.:bangwall: I can't wait!!!! Hope fully it goes through.

It really would suck if it didn't.

A 4.2 costs about 850 from 5 Star (Someone correct if iam wrong) but guess what it fell through he couldn't find one on island, I still got p&P heads and gasket matched intake manifolod. I costs like 1200 to get the brand new 4.2 to my door step. so summer it is.

dont mean to be a d!ck... but... (right from the tech articles...)

91 - 93 5.0 found in birds.

200 hp @ 4,000 rpm
275 lbs.-ft. of torque @ 3,000 rpm

Eh, you're not a "RICHARD" lol... I read the same article just remembered a different number. Still 25ft/lbs isn't enought to be "waaaayyyy more" torque.

Keep Cool :zspot:

Switch to a 4.2L engine. I think you will be happier with it rather than a 302... I can't believe I am actually saying that but yeah I would go with a 4.2L unless you are gonna want to make a 14.5 et or less car.

heh, but me thinks i got a new pplan a brewing. it wont be easy, and it wont be cheap. but, i think when i go for a new drivetrain in my 90 it will be 99+ GT motor, t-46 (with shifter box mod so its in stock position), dennis driveshaft, mark 8 rear with 3.55 trakloc. i know it will be really hard to do, but i think i'll be pleased with the end result (260 hp and 302 ft/lbs of torque.. mmmmmm). a first estimate i came up with (doing it myself) is about 5000 - 5500 bucks.. i think it will be more tho, cause i want to (unless itis from the factory, i know the older 4.6's arent), strengthen the motor for the future possibility of a blower :D .-greg
