The Fel-Pro intake kit MS-94045-1 uses cork gaskets for the front and rear seals. I found the Ford Winstar 3.8L uses the seals below. Metal and rubber gasket holds much better than the cork. You can purchase the gaskets individually. F65Z-9A424-AA and F65Z-9A425-AA are the part numbers. Picture is below.

WOW you are the man! That is one of my biggest pet peeves about the fel-pro gasket kit. Instead of using cork I just put gobs of silicone on there. But I'll deffinetely order those pieces when I do my head/cam swap. Thanks for the info Rich!

the valley's are all the same (same block) so I'd assume the area where the lower intake mates to the valley would be the same also.

Are those gaskets the original equipment used on ford windstars. If so are they really any good. Most of the complaints on the internet about the windstars are the intake manifold and headgaskets.

The Ford SC OEM gasket was all rubber and you applied a bead of RTV to it on the top side during assembly. Since Ford no longer offers the black rubber gaskets and cork is the only thing that ships in the kits I know for a fact that these Winstar gaskets are far better. The metal clips that hold it to the block keep it from moving during assembly. The part number is a 1996 base part so since 1996 this is the gasket used on the factory Winstar engines. Add a bead of RTV to the ends during assembly. This Winstar gasket is not designed to use sealer and relies on the intake to press it down to form the seal. I myself added a thin bead of RTV sealer to the center groove of the gasket.

So what you're saying is basically that when you use this gasket you should apply rtv to the groove for better sealing and to reduce the chance of a intake manifold leak. My next question and i know that i'm going off the subject. Do you think that this is the reason that the windstar intake gaskets fail, due to the fact that they should've used some type of sealer on the grooves not just on the ends. I'm asking this because i also own a windstar. Our family has owned fords since i was 9 yrs old.

Tino, I don't think that gasket is the main problem on the Windstars. The gaskets that fit between the lower intake manifold and the head are the problem. When they fail, they leak coolant into the cylinders and into the oil. That's a major problem. My mom's Windstar is actually sitting right outside waiting for me to finish reassembling it, because of that exact same problem.

If an end seal fails, it leaks a little oil out of the engine ... not a big problem. I guess you could call it an "auxiliary breather". Actually, I realized about a year ago that the rear end seal on my T-Bird is misaligned. It has been that way for 6 years, and I might lose a little oil there, but I don't think it's worth tearing the engine open.

One of the manifolds that I removed from my mom's Windstar looked like that, and the other one looked 5 times worse. The rubber bead that circles that port was stretched to about double its size and was all tangled up in the intake port. There were globs of what used to be oil and coolant all throughout the lifter valley. I hope it ever runs again.

I can vouch firsthand that the Windstar seals are very easy to install correctly and securely. And my mom's 96 Windstar with 100K+ didn't seem to have any leakage from that area, so I think the seals work well.

Rich, brilliant idea ... I don't think I would have ever thought of that.

So this gasket is for the upper manifold? I'm a little confused. I thought that this was for the lower manifold gasket. That is where the problem lies. What type of gaskets do the lower manifold use.

these gaskets seal the lower manifold to the valley of the block.

Thomas posted some good pics. I think that's a T-Bird 3.8 in the pictures. He has the end seal locations circled. (Where the cork pieces go.)

You can see the intake ports on the left and right of the lifter valley. (The parts that aren't circled.) That is where the problem gasket lies on the Windstar. The Windstar 3.8 and the 4.2 in the pics I linked to have different ports from the T-Bird 3.8, so it looks a little different.

Yes that's the 3.8 in my 93 t-bird during the ported intake installation.

The ports look different because the engines you speak of have split-port heads.
