1996 V6 3.8L T-Bird with 83K on the odometer. The check engine light is on and when the codes were accessed the following came up. P0156 and P0136.

1. Does anyone know what these indicate.
2. What may be the causes.

All my friendly mechanic wants to do is to change out the sensors, not diagnose the root cause. Any Ideas other than getting a new mechanic?

How accessable are the sensors, I have just moved back from Hawaii and some of my tools are still on loan to my ex son in law. (I doubt that I will see them again).

Many thanks for the quick reply.

They're not too shrouded in there. They are under the car, one behind each of the 2 front catalytic converters, and the pipes go right along side the bottom of the transmission. It'd be a lot easier to get them out with the oxygen sensor tool. You can rent it at some auto parts stores.

the rear o2 sensors are easy to get to if you have ramps, and I had to tighten one last week, and i used a wrench. just unplug it first so you don't break the wires as you are loosening them.
