I was wondering if any of the fine folks on here have ever dumped their 4.6 in favor of going back to a carb'd 5L, 5.8L, or maybe even the BIG BLOCK 460??

I am not wanting to turn my car into a money pit and since it will take 1500 to 2000 just to get it painted and back straight again, I figure I would be better off either parting it out or gutting it out and dropping that 2G into another vehicle of some kind (YES A FORD!!)

Any opinions? Anyone tried stuffin a 460 into one? Should I decide to part it out, I will advertise it on here. Engine and trans work great, but the engine has a slight miss and intermittent falling on its face and I am REALLY getting tired of dealing with it. Besides that, I need something like the wife's Focus to get to and from work when I come and go from the truck. $20 for a round trip is a LOT easier to swallow than $43.

Should I go big, I had a brainstorm of putting a not too small (75 mm or so) on it to give it around 8 or 10 pounds of boost to hopefully hit the 500HP mark. Had a couple guys on turboforums dot com tell me a crosseyed turbo with 12 psi would hit 600 without even breathing hard. and with stock heads and a mild port and polish, and decent single plane intake also.

460 has been covered. 90 sc 460 did the swap. The 5.0 wouldn't be out of this world as it was an option in the chassis at one time. It will fit. The 5.8 has also been done. Honestly take a bit and search, all three have been done.

get ready to beef up the torque converter/transmission to handle the torque of a big block 460...thats another 2G's easy

I would just do a PI swap, and you can have as much torque as you want by using shorter gears in the differential..this way you get more torque at the wheels (which is what the 460 would accomplish), WITHOUT having to subject the transmission to handle extra torque; the extra torque comes from the multiplication effect of the shorter gears

460 fits nicely. C6 cheaper than a 4r70w. The headers are even cheaper.
So is the oil pan.
This all works out if you have a 460 stiiing in your garage from 15 years ago.

1-460 fox swap headers and oil pan.
2-Make your own motor mounts.
2A-Remember the engine is off center to the right.
3-The headers will have to be modded on the drivers side to clear the steering shaft.
4-The number three tube. The right side fit like they wrer made for that car.
5-The power booster is in the way, mine is a 92 V-6 cougar.
5A-I did not do the manual swap. It was done by a mustang shop.
6-Trans mount can be home made. Shifter cable mounts up no problem.
7-Custom drive shaft.
My cougar runs, but not fully finished due to racing in the NMRA this summer.
Also I tried cast iron manifolds but they did not fit. They were 429 SCJ manifolds.
One last thing, it was more work to remove the V6 than to Replace and remove many times the 460.

I dont think all that stuff is going to allow him to reach his goals of saving fuel (thus money)...but oh well

Before doing anything to the motor, I'd upgrade as much of the drive train as I could and do a computer tune....that is if it were my $2000. Supposedly 3.73's and 4:10 do wonders for these cars.

DMV kicked my .........

Putting a 460 in your car will be cheap , fast and easy . But , the being street legal will be the one hardest thing . In Las Vegas they will not let me run it , even if my milige and smog is better then the stock . Check with those retardes at DMV First , even for a swap you think is is legal , those scum sucking dirt baggs may have a problem ( God , I'm still bitter). The swap it self is easy . The trany just bolts in , used oil pan and tube is too cheap and a new one can be found for $150.00 plus the dip stick . The engine in my Thunderbird did close with the stock hood and didn't sit on the oil either . Not including the machine work to the engine (that you will have to do , maybe ) and the super rebuilt C-6 (AOD if you use a $300.00 TCI bell housing that bolts on ) you can put it in your car for $700.00 or less with some new parts without the engine and trany . And I'm a road racer so the handling is good .

If it's legal for you to do it ............WELCOME TO MONSTER ISLAND !!!!

Just a suggestion - Buy a play car, don't do this to your daily driver.

That way, when you hit a "Whoops!" you can still get to and from work.

Just a suggestion ...

I am actually going to do that, if I ever get the money saved up. I found an escort near where I live, just havent found out how much for it or what all is wrong with it...

but being 6'4" tall kinda makes that car not really feesible, but since it would get good gas mileage compared to the tbird, it would be worth buying. I would just have to move the seat back about 4 or 5 inches...

One of my girl fiends called , so I couldn't write back .........WHAT DOES THAT MEAN AND WHAT DID I SAY ? I didn't know that was your only car . I did every thing including the engine and trany for $760.00 . If you can't own two cars , don't do any thing to your car till you can . My second car cost me $175.00 and I'm driving it now . I got it from craigslist .

Would you happen to possess any detailed images of your swap?

BTW, by federal law, it's illegal to put an older engine in a later car.

If you come up with a 96 or later 460, they should allow it, unless it's one of the communist states like California. As long as it passes smog checks.

My 98 Mark motor is legal to put in my Cougar, as is my 03 CV long block. :)

Not that anyone would notice here if it had a 18 wheeler engine sitting in the seat beside me, as long as I had mirrors to see around it, lol. You really would not believe the cars/trucks I've seen here...

The best one yet was the guy with in a truck with 40" mud tires and a lift kit trying to stay with me on an exit ramp; I hit it at 70, he hit the berm and did a General Lee move, lol. The stuff I see in my rear view...

I dumped one guy twice about a month apart in the same curve several years ago; He thought a ranger pickup would stay with my firebird thru the curves. Twice, lol. :bangwall:
