going to install a cooler this week

what line do i splice into to install my cooler, the top or the bottom (from the radiator)

96 4.6 4r70w

bottom of the rad is the return to the trans

top of the trans is return from the rad

so top line on the radiator is hot line

bottom line of transmission is hot line

hes gonna want to splice it in on the top line then that goes back to the tranny after the tranny cooler and im pretty sure the bottom of the radiator is not the return line its the feed line the top is the return. I dont know if they switched them in the 96-97s but i know for a fact in the 94s the top one is the return because i used it to empty the transmission of fluid and its in the tech articles the A trains shift kit install step 2

You're backwards. The top line at the radiator is the return line, the bottom line at the radiator is the hot line.

Thats what i was thinking too, but arnt some of the earlier birds/cougars the opposite?? Maybe thats what he was thinking

Not according to a-train and not what I had on mine. My radiator top fitting was connected to the pressure line. Bottom fitting on radiator went back to the trans top fitting.

Ahh ok I re-read his article and saw where I made the mistake. On my car, it would have been obvious if someone forced the lines backwards at the trans but mine were "backwards". There's no way you can mess up the lines at the radiator. So I wonder what gives...

when we hooked mine up.. hot was going to top.. we even hooked an inline filter, which only flows one way, and it was going great for two months until i hit that damn stone.. then i just bypassed rad all together

did Ford fcuk up when they hooked some of these up?

so should i just unhook both and crank the car and see what one spits out fluid, and then splice into the other one?

im wondering if when some had trans work done if the lines connected to the trans were reversed on accident

but if my car has been untouched it should still be the top line on the radiator is the return correct??

You could hook them up wrong but someone would have to bend a line to do it and it would be obvious. So this tells me on some mn12s, they hooked the trans to radiator lines in different.

The tranny cooler should come with instructions. If I remember right the return line is preferred. That would be the upper hard line. But personally it does not matter as long as it's in there somewhere.

Well in a way it does matter because if you live in the south/ warmer states you wanna run the cooler after the radiator because you would be defeating the purpose of the cooler because if you ran it b4 the radiator you would be cooling then warming it back up a tad. Now i know some people will run it b4 the cooler simply for the fact that they live in a colder climate (winter) and dont want the fluid to get too cool, I live in WI so i do have a somewhat cold winter, but on my old cougar i ran it after and never had problems.

I often run the cooler before the radiator with big stall converters because they create alot of heat. That heat can make your engine run too hot especially if you run 3/8 lines like I often do.
