2000 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. Any different from 2002 expedition motor or what? If so, what kind of different? Good different? Bad different?

I've had good luck with mine. 70K in 4 years. Many trips. Absolutely no engine problems whatsoever.

Actually in 2002 Ford introduced the 5.4L NVH block that is designed to reduce "noise, vibration and harshness". This block is not the same as the 99-01 block and Ford says that it is not interchangeable.

Both 2000 and 2002 should come with PI heads. I would check the 00 one and make sure that it is not a late 99 non-PI head. Also the 00 and 02 intake gaskets do not match. In 02 the two dowel holes are moved back over to the valley side of the ports. There are two versions of the gasket, one that has a coolant restrictor built into the gasket and one that does not.

If I had a choice I will pick the 00 motor over the 02 in our cars because of the block difference.

Thank god for 5.4 specialists. Thanks for your help guys. Now to scrounge up the cash for it. 159k mile motor vs 33k mile motor... hmm... makes it all the more tempting.

Just out of curiosity, do you know what they changed about the block that makes it so different? The gaskets wouldnt really be a big problem, but I wonder why they wouldnt interchange.

In 02 Ford re-designed the 5.4L to what they called NVH. The NVH block is smoother and quieter. It has a casting # 2L1E-A3C. The Ford microfiche says it can’t be retrofitted for earlier applications. Rumor has it that the following changes were made:

The engine block was made stiffer, through addition of computer-designed reinforcements cast into the block sidewall and metal was thickened along the gasket surfaces.

I am not saying that the motor can not be modified to fit one of our cars. But I believe that not all the parts are interchangeable with the older 99-01 motors, which is more common in the junkyards. To date no one has tried to put an 02+ 5.4L motor into an MN12. ;)

It will be a little more difficult. Harder to find parts in the junk yard. Nobody has done the swap.

On the other hand it will be a smoother engine in the car. If it made a difference in the pickups/SUV's, it will definately help in a uni-body car.

It will be more difficult and the tune will change since the 02 PI heads have different charts. This basically says that it may take a year of dyno tunes to get her straightened out if you have the ability. You may have to pay for a tuner to visit your area... Doing something that has not been done before has its costs.

I know I have been there before. I recommend that if you go that way you make a RPM, load, spark chart and get Brian Herron to visit after you did all the work. Trust me, it will easier to duplicate what has been done before and use the pre-02 block. If you do the same thing I did, since I have optimized my tune you can benefit by spending less money and use my tune. I doubt that there are many 5.4L MN12's that run as well as my car does.

5.4, the swap everyone said was next to impossible in the mn12s, but now i see a handful of 5.4 swapped birds, when ford changed the block desighn in 02, what exactly did they change to make the engine quiter & smoother, did they put more metal on the thing so there was less noise put outside the car, ive always thought the 99-01 5.4s werent very noisey, maybe exhaust wise they were, there def rougher then the 02+s tho

It is all about competition. Ford did it to make sure that they had the lead in all areas against the competition. Toyota came out one year saying that they had the quietest motor. This only lasted a year. Ford simply re-designed the motor.

Among what I mentioned they sandwiched plastic between metal for the oil pan, changed the valve covers, changed gaskets and re-designed the belt tensioner. Speaking of which be prepared if you do the swap the belt tensioner wines like crazy.

uh... thats not the belt tensioner... thats the uh... twin turbo supercharger thingeemabob!
:D

Anyways, this is an added part from an edit.
I just got an e-mail back from the person selling it. They clearly listed it as a "COMPLETE" engine with all the wiring and everything. In my e-mail I asked if it came with the power improved components.

Here is what I got in a reply.

Hello,

Sorry, but the parts requested are not included with the engine.
Seems to me someone doesn't know what the heck they are selling....

Edit #2
J Miller. If you can tell me anything else about this motor from this information, that'd be great.
