3.8 automatic, starting running rough about a week ago. lack of power, stumbling under acceleration. new plugs, wires, cap n rotor and coil. just replaced the timing chain, all the timing is set right. now my problem is its shakes pretty bad, and it almost stalls out in gear. it deosnt sound like its missing anymore, so i fixed that problem, im just at a loss for what it could be. any ideas would be appreciated

87 is a bit older, check your vacuum lines, see if it's throwing any codes.

Assume timing 10 deg with spout plug out.
- if the timing dances or jitters, worn dist or bad pickup

Check fuel pressure, open FP Reg vac line.. fuel in it?

Read the plugs.

Disconnect ECT and try

Check TPS. Normal idle speeds at start?

When you checked for vac leaks did you disc IAC first? Makes it a lot easier. Shim Throttle stop if needed to keep running, dont adjust screw.

Disconnect ALL vacuum and plug, EXCEPT FPR. Change?

Watch engine running in dark.. spark jump? If none, THEN...
To find vac leaks use unlit propane torch, engine speed and sound will change assuming IAC disconnected.

Map sensor.. disconnect vac line, see if change

Edited to address procedural safety

Reverse those two ... LAST thing to do is to spray unlit propane around a motor that's arcing ...

Clean the throttle body. Have the fuel injectors ever been cleaned?

Good point.

They were individual thoughts.

thanks guys ill try these out. its running decent right now, just a little hard to keep running at first start up when its cold, and it feels like its still a little low on power. would a vac leak seem better once its warmed up?

Yep. Would be balky and hesitant when driven cold from startup
