Hello, i'm new and might be dipping into an 89 SC i'm going to check out. need some information to see if you guys think its a good buy or just stay away from it...

current info: (BTW sight unseen)

89 SC
5spd
tranny lost 5/Reverse gears, needs some work
car back fires/ hard to crank, owner thinks its catalictic converters.
(my opinion Fuel Pump/filter fuel delivery)
aprox: 170k miles
good int/ext, some rust.

$700

basically car will be daily driver/ slight mods to suspension (drifter)

what should i look for?
what do you guys think?

I might be joining the SC family soon:D

i'm thinking i can get it for a lil cheaper, maybe $500 or less, thanks for the opinion dont want to dig more holes when it comes to cars.... estimated off the top of your head how much for the tranny/sincrow repair/ exhaust/ fuel delivery cost of parts alone, i do all my work minus weld and probably the tranny rebuild, i'll plan to take out the tranny but what do you think?

setup to see car tomorrow, but do u even think its worth it?

I don't see how a 17 year old car with rust that doesn't run well, has a bad tranny and 170K on it is deal for $500?

A deal would be a 17yr old rusty one that runs and drives and hopefully has cold AC too. ;)

ah dont listen to the non sc owners they are tainted by their big bad v8s.

lol if ya want the sc go for it I love mine ive owned 8 in the past 3 yrs . i buy em fix em sell em and parts for them .

truth is the sc is a high maitanance car but they kick butt on the v8 tbirds. ill prove it anytime a v8 guy wants to race me. stock vs stock sc wins mines lightly modified so i can go ok high 13s for a almost stock sc is not bad . i have the option of going faster if I want but 13s is a fun street car without the breakage.

now I know some v8 guy is gonna chal;lange me with his twin turboed v8 or cobra powered tbird he made . but hey Ive got a few tricks up my sleave too .

if ya want to drag race dont start with a tbird use a mustang its smaller.

anyway do what ya like and remember the non sc guys hate the sc's

and have no experience with them . or were not smart enough to work on thir sc themselves

want to get good answers about buying a sc go to sccoa.com where you will get the truth good bad or ugly. need brain surgury go to a brain specialist need a heart trans plant go to a heart doctor need info on a sc go to sccoa
I personally just got a 90 sc fully loaded for $150 needs engine work its a good deal $500 is a bit high but in some areas $500 is the going rate for a fixer.

the missing is a few hundred $ to fix at most the trans do yourself under $500

so you end up with a good sc for $1,150 not so bad a deal.

thanks for the input, everyone has their own opinions on things, i totally understand what your saying about the V8 guys and i'm an open minded person when it comes to potential. I like to see the potential in things rather than strictly the bad points...

I see it exactly how you see it depending how bad the car is in when i get there, decides how interested i am. if the things falling apart left/right then i'll keep searching but I have to see something to be able to eliminate the car off my list.

is there something special to get on to sccoa because i tried and its saying my IP is banned when i've never even heard of the site.

never said it wasnt fast , not knowing the history of the car, most of the scs that were not enthuisist owned were beat into the ground, becasue they didnt know and or care. and as old as they are , for parts avalalbilty and cost wise your actually better off now with a v8 car,

I own both. I am not sure about making a drifter out of a SC. Ask when the headgaskets were replaced. Another big thing to look at that no one has mentioned is the brake booster. I love the SC's they are a blast. They are project cars to say the least but all in all they all are. And between the 2 forums you can fix just about anything.

As for SCCoA. You shouldn't have trouble. Who is your provider?

brake booster? check if it leaks? or just the overall condition as in rust and what not....

keep the input coming, i wanna be able to trouble shoot these cars before i get into it..

No the booster is a big ol thing that goes bad quite frequently. Accumulators, pumps, relays etc.
