Im not 100% positive, but Im going to say No.
I had a 3" intake tube that went over the Fuel rail and when i closed the hood it put a small dent in it. Considering the placement of the 96/97 throttle body further up, and the fact that the hood is raised, Im going to say that it probably will not fit under your hood without putting a dent in it.

I have read that it is close. I believe that you will have to remove the padding(or whatever the heck it is) on the bottom of the hood. A PI intake isn't any taller than a NPI, it just goes deeper into the valley of the engine (I believe). You might be ok, but close the hood slowly just in case.

I put an Explorer motor in my '95 with a FRPP PI intake. I used the Explorer throttle body which I think is a little taller because it has a plate attached to the top. It did rub a spot in the padding. Even when I slammed the hood it never hit metal.

The only rubbing I have is the intake tube on the fiberglass, hood closes just as easy as it always did.

Mine is very close and barely touches the hood insulation.Still I would rather go with a 3 inch cowl just to be safe.
