Hello,
I have a 1994 Ford Thunderbird LX 4.6 with the 4r70w with 96,000

I suspect that the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid (TCC) or the Shift Control Solenoid have gone bad. I am experiencing delayed upshifts at high RPM from 1st 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. If I manually shift from 1st to 2nd there is not a problem. The trans fluid is full I just checked.

As a result I am planning on dropping the whole valve body removing the accumulator springs and replacing the gaskets and pistons. Basically I will just do the JMod since I already have the damn thing apart. Now I have watched Rizzo's 40 min video and read all of the tech articles, but as I was looking for parts I got stumped on which solenoids to buy. in that video the wiring harness for the trans temp sensor, shift control sensor, and TCC sensor is a hard wire wiring harness. Where I am confused is that when I look at the Solenoids on Rock Auto or Autozone, they say soft wire and appear to have a cable coming off of the solenoid instead of just having a terminal attached to the base.

So my question is were there 2 different kinds of transmission valve body wiring harnesses

Did the harness change between 94 and 95 from soft to hard? Because if I select 95 Thunderbird on any auto part site then it comes up with a slightly different looking TCC solenoid then when I do the same search for a 94

Thanks in advance for any help, it is much appreciated

I will be replacing the filter and refilling with mercon V in the process

Odd, the first one looks like the one that came from my original (94) transmission, there was not a wire pigtail coming off it like in the second example. My car was built in April 94, so it's possible this was a midyear update, that design was used in early AODEs

The later solenoids designed for the molded hard harness were basically the same design as the first example also, but without the connector body, just the two exposed terminal prongs

Well i guess ill just go for the molded one and hope for the best. I should really just pull the pan to find out. But i want to have the parts for when I do so I don't have to buy more mercon. Cause that stuff aint cheap either

The writer says there are two different TCC solenoids. In talking to a mechanic, they said it makes no difference.

"TCC (Torque Converter Solenoid) - 2 different ones!
1 to 3 ohms - F2VY-7G136-A (1992-1995) Note:This part # F2VY-7G136-A is still the current number.
10 to 16 ohms - F7AP-7G136-AA (1996-up valve body only)
(If your vehicle is pre 1996 then use the F2VY-7G136-A TCC solenoid.) If you are unsure check the TCC with an OHM meter. The 1-3 ohms solenoid should be about 1.3 ohms and the 10-16 ohm solenoid should be about 10.9 ohms. The 1-3 ohms TCC has a Black connector and the 10-16 ohms TCC has a WHITE connector."

I went with the the older one for my 94 tranny.

If you put the wrong one in the wrong car, it kills the eec.

I think it's putting an old tranny in a newer car, but idk.

F7AP-7G136-AA does not appear to be a good current part number. It looks like an engineering number. F5AZ-7G136-A is the part number listed in the system for 1996-1997. It changed again in 1998 with the advent of the hard internal harness.

This is what I show in the system currently for part numbers. The early DSS may be obsolete but there are several aftermarket replacements out there.

TCC F2VY-7G136-A (1992-1995)
F5AZ-7G136-A (1996-1997)
F8AZ-7G136-AA (1998-2008)

6L3Z-7G484-A (1998-2008)
