Has anyone ever checked to see if the 96-04 Mustang power steering rack is some what identical to the tbird/cougar/mark? The tbird mounting holes are 15 1/2 inches apart, that is the same as a Mustang rack. Is it the angle of the steering shaft connection that is different? My original 1996 rack is junk, need a replacement. Thought a Mustang one looked the same. Thanks, Josh

My understanding from research into a manual rack conversion is that the rack mounting locations are the same, and the angle that the steering shaft comes out is close enough, however the spline count is different from the rack to the steering shaft requiring a different rag joint or a flaming river u-joint, and the inner tie rods are not only different, but have different threads where they attach, so you can't simply swap the tbird inner tie rod ends onto the mustang rack. I believe someone figured out a Chrysler tie rod setup that would work with the mustang rack, but I don't know all the details.

Why can't you just keep the Mustang inner/outer tie rods? Are they longer or shorter or they won't fit the spindle?

I think they're too short. Though I was under the impression the manual racks people were using were for Fox Bodies and Pintos, not SN95s. I don't know if the inners are different or not for those.

The rack is otherwise identical though, shaft angle and all. The SN95 doesn't use splines though, it's sort of a semi-triangle shape the rag joint clamps to instead.

I guess I'll just get a reman tbird rack from the rack doctor. Few guys on here have gone with them, I'll give them a shot. I had a chance to get a used mustang rack for $20 (save a couple bucks), but I'd rather have something fit the first time around.

I have bought 2 from Rack Doctor. One has 4k+ miles without issue. The other was just installed in my project so I can't give feedback on it. They aren't stiff at all like you hear about from the parts store remans. Get them to provide the return label but not the outer tie rods.

No, but I see the number is still good, and still goes to Antioch Auto Parts. :)

I'll call them tomorrow while I'm at work; I'll see if it's still available.

I don't currently need one, but "Need" is one of those funny words; Cost can significantly affect need... :)

I've replaced two; the Tbird hasn't failed yet.
