Ok the g/f offered to give her engine when it dies, and was wondering what I would need to do to drop in her 93 5.0 into my 96 3.8 Cougar (DIS and CA emssions).

I may be wrong on this, but I believe the tranny won't accept the swap.

Also, Springs are different (slightly), ECC is different - seems like a lot of work.
IMHO, You can buy another car cheaper than the labor involved...

That and the engine is older than the car, I don't know about the smog nazi laws, but in a lot of states, if you swap engines, the engine has to be the same or newer year.

Tranny will bolt up, same bellhousing bolt pattern. You'll have to figure out how to convert the 5.0 to DIS. Where are you located?

It might not be a bad idea to check your state laws to see what you can and can't do. Like Rich said, some state laws require a newer year engine in an older car.

I live in Atlanta. 100 miles outside of Atlanta, they don't yet have emmisions testing, but it is rumored to become statewide soon.

Originally, they just shoved a sampling tube into the exhaust and checked the idle CO and HC. That was years ago, in the 70's and 80's. I was a mechanic at the time, and have done quite few of those myself.

Now they put your car on a chassis dyno, and test everything - from CO, HC, NOx, etc. - Under road load and idle conditions. I don't know where you got yours tested, but if they only sampled at idle, it is not legal in the 7 county Atlanta region. You can't get a tag without the computer printout and state authentication.

So, where was this again... I have a few I need tested the OLD way... ;)

In Rockdale. Load an Idle is done still but the probe is gone only plug into EEC and gas cap. By the printout CO2 and the like are not directly read anymore just what the O2 sensors send.

But anyway I'll check with the DMV on old engine new car issue.
