So i think at 120k miles i'm having a issue. Noticed a small leak at output seal. took a long trip over the weekend had some smoke off the pipes. trans is acting a little funky checked and added about a pint of fluid. Now I get slippage at strat up when cold. Almost as if its not quite in gear, then everything is fine until i park it. then a little slip when first shift then it goes away.

If i drop a used unit in can i swap form a 98 model? there are several of those locally with low miles at the yard 96 units seem to be a little rarer.

If i use a unit from the 97/98 vintage what do i need to look for and what else is required for a sucessful swap?

A 98 trans has better internals than the 96 but you will need to repin the harness per the tech article available here. Otherwise it's plug-n-play.

Update

So I had the oil changed. ( yes, i paid to have it done as I'm still only partially mobile due to foot surgery) The receipt noted small leak at tail shaft seal. I went on an extended ride last weekend, the car smoked at intersections and the trans acted funny. I put some fluid in and continued to drive. I made an appointment at a shop I trust to have the "SEAL" replaced.

Well I've read here before about the tail shaft housing bolts coming loose, all of them several turns before they could be snugged up. Both U joints had scoring and cracks. Filled the trans up it started to leak again.

Drop the tank, unbolt the rear, pull the drive shaft, remove exhaust, get new u joints get new gasket for tail shaft get new bushing and seal.

4 total hours on the lift plus 2 u joints one bushing one seal one gasket several new exhaust bolts 8 qts of merc V. Good buddy deal only $400.00 flat for everything.

OMFG!! The car never ran this good! Must have been an on going problem since I bought it last year, as I never drove the car new I had no bench mark for performance. I guess the drag on the joints and housing was robbing a bit of power to say the least, as well as never shifting correctly.
