I was browsing Craigslist for a Newer model T-Bird (Think its about time to Retire my 93) and came across a '96 4.6 LX for sale in a local town. The T-Bird was in an accident, looks like they hit a deer on the front driver side corner but I could be mistaken, apparently hit it hard enough to deploy the Driver Side Airbag. Car has 144k miles, Auto, Sunroof, Gold on Tan leather interior, and they are asking $800 for it.

My questions are as follows:
1) Since the driver airbag has been deployed. can I fix it myself or do I HAVE to take it to a bodyshop / dealer to have it reaplced & the system reset?

2) With the airbag being deployed is it worth the $800 anyways? (I sent an email asking if the car runs / still driveable but have to yet get a response, they did update the posting with new pictures after I sent the email though)

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated,

Mark

$2500 here to replace the airbags and you can't buy them new without having them installed by the dealer and serial numbers logged.

You can take the chance and get wrecker airbags, but would
You trust them?

I replaced both deployed bags on one of my 96's. The trick was the module had to be replaced (behind the glove box) and had to make sure all sensors were intact. Bought all parts for less than $100 from the local yard.

Absolutely. If they're blown they're bad, if they're not blown they're good.
I'd agree; detonator technology is pretty robust.

When NASA wants to make sure something works, explosive actuators is what they use.

Any accident we could survive, the airbag internals won't notice; unless they deploy. :)
