Is there anything in particular to look for when shopping for a 97/8 F-150?? Beater car died, so I'm looking for something to replace it and be farm worthy at the same time. My dad's got a 97, it's been a great truck thus far, no problems at all, granted it doesn't have that many miles on it. My price range allows for around 130K+ miles, so I'm thinking ball joints for sure and trans issues. Probably going with a 4.6, but if a 5.4 is in my price range I'll go that route. Thanks

Great trucks, I love mine to death.

I don't think there are really any major issues to look out for.

Here's a pic.

imo , buy a 92-96 they are a tougher truck , and being its going to have farm uses, youll be happier with it, and if you opt for a 250/350 you can get a 460 or 7.3 di turbo

I don't really care for them. I like the newer F-250/350s. I have actually grown to like my style. Didn't care for them much before. Problem is gas mileage. You ought ask them to fill it up and take a decent sized drive. Fill it back up and see the ratio of gallons of gas to miles. They might say it's one amount, but you may drive it differently. Guy I bought mine from said 15mpg, I get 10. Stock I was still getting 10.5-11mpg. You can see what I've done.

For a daily beater, an older F150 (or possibly Bronco) maybe the way to go. If it's going to be a most of the year daily driver, then I'd try for something newer, 97/98 F150. My dad has a 98 F150 4.6 and likes it, except for the 4.6. I've got a 00 5.4 and really like it. I'll be the first to admit that the fuel mileage isn't fantastic, but I didn't buy it for the mileage. If you shop around, you might be able to find a good 97/98 F150 with reasonable mileage at a good price. The 4.6's are cheap.

Never had one problem with my 98 4.6 4r70w 2wd nascar edition.

Just general maintenance.

Everything is for sale for the right price, mine just turned 61k miles on it, and has synthetic everything and its totally serviced.

Thanks guys, really appericate the replies. My dad has had 1/2 ton Fords since I was born (and before that actually...) and that is all we have have for trucks in our family. Basically I'm looking for a winter driver to/from school and farm truck all seasons. I realize gas milage isn't going to be that great, but I'd rather have that than trying to manuver the cougar around in snow (it just ain't happen')

95badbird-that is the exact same color combo my dad has with his...except his is reg cab.

Right now, I'd rather have an ext cab xtl/lariet than just a plain old xl, since i will be drinving it to school (~4 hr drive...creature comfort) but it definately will be used on the farm. but if i find a reg cab cheap enough...I'm sold.

I know the 93-96's are cheaper, but I'd rather have a 97-8 since I know more about the drivetrain than the earlier ones...oh and 4 wd is a must. even if I can get one for 1K, if it isn't 4wd, no way.

what's a good price for something w/100-150K on it w/4.6? This is the fist time I'm shopping for a truck so I haven't had an eye on these lately. I'm seeing lots if ext cab 4wd in the range from $5-8K that I wouldn't mind having. Lower milage is pretty much cost prohibitive, and I know a 4.6/5.4 will run plenty past 150K miles.

There's no market for the early 5.4 superduties, everyone wants a diesel. It's almost the same truck as the f150 but much more capable and with more room. You might be able to find one at a great price.

not to mention the 97+ f150s dont have the twin i-beam front suspension, they use a short long arm suspension.
