I remember that from years ago, in stock form the engine should be rather healthy, figure a stock 90 makes 235 crank hp, that low end torque must be a beast in an aero

The LS1 idea is a much more reliable setup, Ive personally known folks to put over 200k miles on LS engines with never having the valve covers or oil pan off, a stock LS1 will put down about 370 crank hp with slightly less bottom end tq

Gotta love those guys who enjoy a little experimental adventure now and then.

Rather disappointed however that he didn't post performance figures. I imagine that thing should cruise north of 140 knots easily. With that FI engine, his ceiling is probably closer to 16,000 feet than 6,000. :)

Edit: Yup, according to another article, its top speed is 160 knots... :)

As far as planes go, apparently this BD4 has a pretty high glide ratio (compared to say, a combat fighter or a 747).

I would still rather be on the ground when my engine craps out though.,

In this application SC is better than LS by far. Forced induction.

I'd want one of the new Ecoboost 2300's and a turbo; that's really impressive.

ENGINE TYPE: turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16-valve inline-4, aluminum block and head, direct fuel injection

Displacement: 140 cu in, 2300 cc
Power (est): 305 hp @ 5500 rpm
Torque (est): 300 lb-ft @ 2500 rpm

Much lighter than any of the others. :D

I've heard the 1.0l ecoboost can do 250hp with a blower... :)

Pretty cool project. Sure hope he did the HGs before one blows him out of the sky. Am I the only crazy nut here that would STILL put a high-compression high-revving RPM monster in there instead of FI? :D

Oh and all that work, and he couldn't ceramic/thermal-coat the headers! PFT! Amateur! :cool:

High compression won't do too much for you at 18,000 feet, where the static air pressure is less than half that of sea level... ;)

which is what will allow me to run 30:1 static CR. :D

28 cylinder, turbo-supercharged, 4300 HP, 71.5L wasp, .....
