My tranny is not shifting into 2nd gear until it reaches about 2700 RPM. If I downshift into second and cruise at a slow speed (or fast for that matter) and give it gas (slowly accellerate AND/OR nail it) the tranny slips. Obviously it doesn't downshift if I have it in 2nd manually, it just slips in second.

Can these symptoms be caused by an accumulator piston/spring failure? I would imagine the shifting out of 1st at 2700 is a piston/spring problem, but I don't have a clue about the slipping. I really don't want to spend the money on new accumulator pistons and such if I'll end up changing the tranny anyway, but I really don't want to change the tranny if I don't have to.

What does everybody think?

Sounds like you have a broken piston. Drop the pan remove the piston and inspect the bore. If the spring is broken you will see it. If the bore is destroyed you can either install a kit from sonnax as a temporary fix or replace the transmission.

Broken piston eh? I didn't know they were prone to breaking, just the O-rings blowing out. Oh well, I bought another yesterday with the F7AZ-7F284-AA top spring. I'll put it in this weekend and let you know if the old was broken. I've done even more research since posting this question (I know, should have done it first). If I'd known that the accumulator piston and spring were less than $20, I would have just done if first!

yep alan is right, if that 94 transmission is stock, it has the old fashioned metal piston anyways, and needs to be replaced with the rubber bonded one anyways.

I would order new 1-2 and 2-3 accumulator pistons, two valve body gaskets, a new trans filter, and new springs from dan. Mine as well drill the seperator plate while you have it all apart. I wouldn't mess with the od, its fairly easy to screw up, and not really necessary I don't think. No need to upgrade the reverse servo either.

All the parts I listed above are very cheap.

Get yourself a good pair of snap ring pliars, not a cheapo kind, and get youself either a piston compressor tool (well worth the money), or you can rig it with a bottle jack, I like the compressor tool much better.

I use a flat bar with a hole in it. put a valvebody bolt through the hole with washers to shim it up, makes a nice lever to remove, install the servo's. I use my thumb for the 1-2 piston. Don't forget to get the 1-2 accumulator bonded rubber cap as well.
Do not remove the 2-3 spring unless you update the 2-3 piston. <~~~very important

Thanks for the info...I've done the J-mod on my Cougar...know all about it. The transmission in question is a 95...not a 94. Same deal, I know. I'm not going to pull the valve body out as the car is just a daily driver beater. I will replace the 1-2 accumulator and spring...purchased them Tuesday. If I have problems with the 2-3 shift after that, I'll entertain changing the 2-3 accumulator also.

The 94 you must be referring to might be the SC I have listed in the avitar column. It's a 5-speed.

Hi, I just have the same problem with my transmission do you find the problem with yours buddy ?

The original poster hasn't been on the site in almost 9 years. If you're having the same problem I'd follow the advice that was posted already.
