first you need a timing light to check the timing...when timing, you need to pull the gray plug thats chilling there on the passenger side strut tower...when you pull that, stock base timing should be at 10...to advance, losen the bolt holding the distributor tight then turn distributor clockwise to advance...you only need to turn very little...keep an eye on the timing on the balancer and advance till you get to 14 degrees...i wouldnt go anymore than that...just like a 5.0...be careful not turn the distributor from set position when tightening the bolt to tighten distributor...put the plug back in thats on the strut tower and the timing will advance...take it for a test drive and see how it runs...

you should notice a difference...why not consider a chip? chip will advance the adaptive timing while keeping the base timing at 10...if you do advance the base timing to 14 you may be able to leave it and have the chip burned based on 14 degrees base timing...not sure though...i recommend Fordchip...
