Disconnect MAF and pull off air box and filter.

Remove tire and fenderwell screws and clips.

That tube is your air silencer

Start undoing the bolts and remove the Silencer, Put it all back together PROPERLY and voila!

Those pictures will help for the weekly question of 'how do i remove it'. It is very possible and easy to remove the silencer without pulling the wheel and splash shield, but those pictures will help some folks see where it actually is. Good job.

I'm not to sure if it actually adds power, The idea I believe is more cold air. Only a dyno will tell you if your gaining HP.
Personally after I did it, I felt a little extra umph. I was thinking of fabbing a scoop to direct the air rite to the filter and cutting out the hole you see in your pic to be twice the size.

Just for the mechanically challenged.

1. It should NOT look like that when your done the fender liner needs to be re-installed to prevent water and other road debris from entering your airbox.

2. The air silencer on the 5.0 is different. You will need new bolts to re-attach the airbox as the bolts are part of the silencer. It looks like this

This should be a sticky!!! HINT HINT

P.S. Where did you find that B&W Camera ?? Lol J/K

i'll add my .02

the air silencer on the 89-92 supercoupes and lx birds are indeed different
for the 89-93s i usually just cut the wheel hard right crawl under the front
bumper cover and pull her out with force, no need to unbolt it, the bolts will
stay in place and thus you don't need to replace them.

matter of fact I just did this to my blue 92 5spd yesterday when i swapped
the radiator support

I was gonna say get a better camera (or a real camera if you shot these with a cell phone camera).

Not that you used a cell camera to take these; but I really hate it when people are to lazy to get some decent pictures of something they consider worth taking a picture of...

I think in your case you just need to learn how to use the wifes camera. lol

LOL Nah it's an expensive/high quality digi. I know this because I was the poor sucker who payed for it. I tried to take the flash off and somehow took the pics B&W. Now I will try and learn how to quote messages..... Hopefully I don't crash and burn my lap top!

Oh and what is a sticky?! I'm lost....Anyone got a map?!

"Stickys" are important threads that are "pinned" at the top of each forum section. These threads either contain relevant, commonly asked questions about that topic or rules governing that section of the forum.

They are indicated with a thumb tack logo next to them under the "Rating" column on the right hand side of the screen.

The thread title is also prefaced with "Sticky:".

The General Tech forum has 5 Stickied threads.

So the 3.8 cars have these also? Is it the same process to remove it?

#13 ·
I'm not sure how the 3.8's are set up, At the risk of being torn apart for this statement I don't see why you can't do it. But you might not have to go through the whole process I did. That's just the only way I could "vision" removing mine. I'de wait and check back for a more definative answer from someone with more 3.8 experience.

Thanks man. :)

This is correct. I busted my rusted bolts off. The bolts are held on to the air silencer with rubber so brute force will get it out.

I know this is an old thread but instead of making a new one I just figured I'll ask the question here... has anyone ever locked up there engine because of this mod? Also should I do a K&N filter or a regular paper filter?

#20 ·
No, and regular paper.

AAMOF, removing the air silencer helps reduce the chance of hydrolocking - so if someone managed to hydrolock their motor with it pulled, they for SURE would have with it installed.

And - the biggest two problems with a K&N is overcleaning (i.e., someone here was using a toothbrush on one!) and improper oiling (since the filter just suspends the oil, it's actually the OIL that captures the crud - not enough, crud gets by. Too much, oil can be sucked into the MAF fouling it.)

ya know, i keep hearing about this, but mine came with just a stock tube like the one you see in those black in white pics, except its just open at the end of that elbow, and turned twords the hole in the front bumper... guess someone must have removed mine already /shrug
