I've been reading conflicting info.

Is the block, cast iron or aluminum for 96 and 97 4.6?

If cast, is there an issue with blown head gaskets (cause the heads are aluminum)

Thanks.

Iron, and I havent heard of the 4.6 cars blowing too many head gaskets, though it has happened.

Aluminum blocks only came with DOHC heads until 2002 when the Explorer SOHC got aluminum too. All others are iron. All 5.4L blocks are iron except the "GT" (GT40 super car).

I've only heard of a few people blowing head gaskets. They either overheated the engine to the moon, or were running 15+ psi.
