Looking for comments from Tbird owners that have used this tire size.

A couple of Tbird owners are considering going from 15" to 17" and putting on the Firestone FireHawks with RFT that were made for the C5 Corvette. The size for the Corvette is 245/45 R17. They are pricey at $234 EACH but we have the AED superchargers and so far we are able to break-out on almost any tire except the FireHawks--wet traction is espically poor on most tires. They also like the Run-Flat idea. I'm running the 255/50 R16 Firehawsk w/o the RFT but if they go to the 17", then I probably will too.

Question concerns the nearly 1 inch small O.D. on the 245/45 R17:
size Rim O.D.
--OEM--225/60---16---26.6"
--------255/50---16---26.1"
--------245/45---17---25.7"

Seems like this tire would in effect lower the car about one-half inch.
So let me know your experience running this tire size....thanks...

I run a 245/45/17. Its a really common size, and kuhmo makes a decent tire for 74 bucks each on tirerack.

234 for any tire is a waste of money, spend it on something else. I don't have traction problems, and I make a few horsepower also.

Thanks for your reply JustinH, however, I disagree with the price being the waste of money. A tire blow out at 100+ mph would not be good. The extra price is for the Run Flat Technology--not the traction, or the ride etc.

I forget the last time i went 100mph in any vehicle, and I have never had a tire blow out at any speed so I guess they are not appropriate for me. Nor do I have a thousand dollars in the bank to spend on tires.

Keep in mind that run-flat tires are constructed with much stiffer sidewalls than standard tires, so you will lose some ride quality by installing them on a car not designed for them. Also, they should have some sort of pressure monitoring system to go with them, as it's hard to tell when a run-flat tire is low on pressure ... they do not exhibit the same warning signs such as a squished sidewall, or pulling to one side, that standard tires do.

BTW, the Firehawk SZ50 tire line is being discontinued by Firestone this year from what I understand. Nothing wrong with them, I guess Bridgestone-Firestone is going to concentrate on pushing the Bridgestone Potenza line, and the new Fuzion ZRi line.

Bear in mind also that shorter tires increase your effective numerical gear ratio which will further lessen your traction. You want a taller tire to lower your gear ratio which will also have the added benefit of increasing your mileage slightly. :)

I run 255-50/17s and find them to be perfect for our cars at right about 27" tall. But to each his own. :D

Yes, I also, like the 255/50 R17s for the Tbird.

Just trying to get some feedback on the 245/45 R17s. We're only discussing these tires.

Justin, I've had two flat tires with the Goodyears. But none at high speed. But then again I've never had an air bag go off, or my ABS brakes kick in. Most people will never need these and other safety features either, but for those who did, they'll tell you it was well worth the extra expense.

Go with SW's suggestion. I've run the 245/45/17's for almost three years now
and don't particularly like 'em. In a Z rating there's too little sidewall and what
there is of one is killer stiff. I got them back when that was just about the only
size anybody in the club was buying.

I can't put 255/50/17's on because of my strange offset (39mm), but will
do so as Ronal makes hubcentric spacers approved by them for my rims.

255/50/17's are stock size in diameter and the added sidewall will help
ride comfort and fill up the wheel well a bit better, though I'll still buy W
or Z rated tires as I like to keep the "adverse yaw" (pilot talk) to a minimum.

Nobody has mentioned the 255-45-17...More choices than that of the 255-50-17 and I find the height to be close to perfect. It is just another opinion...The 245-45-17 is used alot but IMO they are too short.

I see that there is a lot of good tire choices in this size and it's only about 1/2" shorter. However, the tread width on some tires is almost an inch less. 0.8 on The BFG. I also see that BFG make a Run-Flat called SSS for Self Supporting Structure in this size. Thanks for pointing out this tire size. I guess I need to start another thread called:
Anybody running 255/45 R17 tires.

I've got 245/50R17 tires on both my cars, with FMC SVT 17x7 Cobra Rs and think they're perfect! A little bigger than 245/45 and a little smaller than 255/50...

Most Vette owners I know hate their run flat tires. I'd say that is the thing changed most on Vettes is ditching the run flats. Read some reviews for Corvettes on tirerack. There are many reviews from Vette owners raving about their new non-run flat tires. They are loud, they are stiff, and handling with them is garbage. If you have speed rated tires, the tire isn't going to just give up on you at high speed if you are taking care of it and keeping it properly inflated. Remember, the #1 cause of tire failure is improper inflation. Its only going to fail if you hit something and if you hit something to blow a tire at speed, the blown tire problaby isn't your only problem.

I have 245/45/17's on the front of mine. I felt that was way too short for the back (especially with 4.10's) and the back has 255/45/18's. This tire fills the wheel well perfectly and if I had it to do over I would problaby put them on all 4 corners although I like the look of it the way it is.
