I'm looking into picking up this ignition for my car. Just looking for comments, positive or negative, on such things as ease of install, timing retard, etc. Thanks.

I've never seen one last more than a year before it failed. And when they fail, you're dead in the middle of the road-there's a reason they give you that nifty little bypass plug..
Garbage.

Hummm...I'm glad I asked.
Are there any quality alternatives? I'm told the stock ignition is only good to 8-10psi max. The engine seems to "break up" under boost (10lbs,) and I figured it was spark blowout. Basically I don't want to hit the dyno with an incomplete setup.

Drop the gap down to about .035" and get a Boost-a-spark.It'll raise the voltage that feeds the coil packs under boost, and that will keep the spark at a strong enough level to jump the gap.

For the record my MSD-4 ignition with accer coil packs has been running THREE YEARS AND ONE MONTH and is still working. Mechanic said not really needed with my AED setup but he had one for 1/2 price that came off of Mustang GT that had blown his engine with in a week of putting on a vortech supercharger. Big reason I like the MSD is the fact that I can limit the rpm before I loan the car to a friend or relative.

Jack,

I see 10 psi of boost with my AED (11 psi with this freeze) and I've used the stock coil packs without any trouble. As JL said, you'll need to drop the gap in order to ignite the A/F mixture under the extreme cylinder pressures.

I myself have no direct experience with the MSD DIS-4 set-up, but I've heard nothing but negative comments about it. Then again, I've also heard negative comments about other products that actually work.

I'll be trying some different plugs with fresh wires once I get her back up and running.
BTW - there is a red mystery box under the hood that no one is sure of (either for fuel or ignition. Looks like the same box KB uses for his boost-a-spark and Boost-a-pump, but there is no adjustment dial anywhere, no markings.) So I just purchased a Ford maual and when I get home on Spring break in a week I will track down the wiring and figure out what it is. That's the problem with buying someone else's project... it can leave you :2huh:

I bet it's better then the DIS-4 that I got, It blew up on me while I was going 70 mph on the highway, lost all ignition to the engine. Rolled safely to a stop on in the emergency lane. Cars flying by at least 70-80-90. Smoking really bad as I open the hood, smoke was coming from the MSD box. I was lucky that Brandon (NVMIBRD) saw me pull over or I was going to be walking a good 3 miles in the rain to the gas station to call my folks who lived in the area. Thanks B!
