A quote from the intro on the Ford Transmissions 101 Tech article:

"...The AODE only came in the following vehicles; 1992-1994 Town Car, Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis and the 1994-1995 Mustang (both the 3.8L V6 and the 5.0L V8). These are the only years and vehicles the AODE was ever produced..."

I thought the '93 T-bird (5.0L) had the AODE. Is it not computer controlled?

Okay, the consensus is that my '95 bird has a 4R70W, which I already knew. What does my '93 bird have?

your tranny shop is full of it, mn12's ONLY have 4r70w's from 94-up and AOD from 89-93

i do believe that the 4r70w's and aode's share some parts but not sure what exactly if at all

edit: i know that I stated differently before but i was very wrong, did my homework by researching...

Why do we still get this wrong?

NEVER has a production MN12 come with an AOD-E. Period. If you think different, you are wrong.

ALL 1989-1993 MN12's came with the AOD, UNLESS they were 5-speed Mazda gear boxes for the 3.8L SC and 3.8L XR-7. The AOD is fully hydraulic.

ALL 1994-1997 3.8L SC, 3.8L V-6, and 4.6L V-8 MN12's came with the 4R70W. The only exception is the '94-'95 SC with the 5-speed manual. The 4R70W is electronically controlled. While it's similar to the AOD-E, the two transmissions are very much different.

Right from a Ford CPD Service Manual...


Clearly states...4R70W!

That really isn't too true.

They are basically the same transmissions with the ONLY two differences being the size of the slip yoke and the gear ratios inside the transmission.

(Of course we have material upgrades (i.e. clutches) over the years, but that goes without being said because that is the case within even the same type of any transmission.)

For those that are confused, the 4R70W (which came in 94-97) is an AODE transmission, meaning that it is an Automatic OverDrive Electronic transmission; it's just that the first AODE's had the different size slip yoke and different gearing, later when changed it was called the 4R70W.

Actually they are very different. The 4R70W (out of the box) can handle more torque than an AOD-E. As stated before and well known, the gearing is different.

AOD-E:
1st....2.40
2nd...1.47
3rd....1:1
4th....0.67

4R70W:
1st....2.84
2nd...1.55
3rd....1:1
4th....0.70

The output shaft on the 4R70W is stronger, than on the AOD-E. In 1998, the 4R70W started using the Mechanical Diode Intermediate One-Way roller clutch. The AOD-E does not have this feature unless it was rebuilt and/or overhauled. The MD OWC is virtually indestructable. The standard OWC (sprag like clutch) fails often.

Sure these parts can all be put into an AOD-E case, but that's not what I'm talking about.

It really doesn't matter much how you want to argue it. The MN12 never had an
AOD-E during a production run.

Like I said material upgrades don't really count as to it being a completely different transmission, because they aren't completely different, they are very much the same with upgraded materials over the years. Because of these upgraded materials over the years of course it can handle more torque, and the mech. diode argument really holds no ground as the first four years the 4R70W was built they did not have mech. diodes. Stronger output shaft is a direct result of upgraded materials.

Just as with anything that is built, they may not reengineer it but merely upgrade the type of material used on a certain part to make it stronger. This does not make it completely different, just improved upon the same design. J even clearly states in his thesis the only two differences in the two.

Using your argument, I could take a 4R70W, remake every single part inside the transmission out of a different material and then it would no longer be a 4R70W. We know that would be silly to say, it would just be a bullet-proofed 4R70W.

If they were totally different I would have never considered using a vehicle's (with the AODE) computer to control my 4R70W (94/95 GT EEC) that was transplanted into my '91.

I'm not saying that you can substitute one for the other, merely saying that they are NOT completely different transmissions, saying they are is just ignorant.

Ford lists it as 4R70W, not an AOD-E.

Somebody at the Blue oval and the bean counters agree with me. They are different.
