Hey everyone,

I have a 91 5.0 with the mods listed in my signiture. I was told the car has a shift kit but I can't really tell. The 1-2 shift feels a bit soft and it shifts at about 4500rpms. The 2-3 up shift is very fast after that, perhaps 10mph, and it shifts veryyyy low in the RPM range, perhaps 4000rpms at best. I'm yet to WOT it into 4th gear because I'm uncertain on the shift kit situation. The fluids were just changed and it shift very well as it should, the points just seem way to soon. My old 5.0 mustang with AODE would hold shifts well into the 5000's. Should I pick up a transgo shift kit.

I was considering also, the car has 3.73 gears, if the shift kit were installed before the gears would this result in early shifts?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Gears won't change your shift points, in terms of RPM, you will just shift sooner.

if you have a shift kit installed and its not shifting fast enough, I would check the TV pressure, also, what kit?

That sounds off to me. It should be shifting close to 6K at WOT on a 5.0. Not sure what would cause that though. Maybe check that the TV cable going from the TB to the trans is hooked up properly at both ends.

Low TV pressure would cause slower shifts, a bad bushing will put the cable out of proper adjustment.

Thanks guys, I'm going to have my mechanic take a look at the TV pressure. Hopefully it will be shifting close to 6000rpms when he's done with it. Any of you ever heard a gear drive on these cars? Mine's a bit noisy, worries me.

DO NOT adjust tv pressure to change shift points. Set tv pressure at 33-35 psi idling warm in neutral or you will fry your transmission. If you want higher shift points either
1. Buy a lentech valvebody and tell them what you want.

2. Install a transgo high rev governor kit
or
3. Get a governor from a car that ran higher rpms. There are 3 governors, neither will take you to 6000 because the stock aod converter is dangerous at above 5000 rpms.

I think I'll go with the transgo and hopefully hold the shifts out to around 5k.

I don't remember the specifics, but I recall Jerry telling us way back that you had to use a different (truck?) governor and alter one of the shift valves in the main control to get the 1-2 and 2-3 shift RPMs equal and at higher engine speeds.

Stangs and MarkVII have the high rev gov, trucks and grandma lincolns have lower rev, and the medium is mixed in there.

We can't really tell you if you have a shift kit or not from your description, but I would say no.

Deffinetly check the TV pressure, it is critcal to trans function and operation correctly.

I use the Becontrols.com shift kit myself. The transgo kit does have a nice 5000rpm+ high rev governor kit with it.

MarkVII's have always been the vehicles I find them in. Mustangs aren't so reliable to have it. Maybe I just find ones that got a trans out of something else put in them. SC's have the lowest governor as well as town cars and crown vics. Some stangs and thunderbirds have the medium governor. None will take him where he needs to be. The transgo high rev governor kit is available seperately. I have bought just them a few times I think they are about $20

really....Last time I called them they said no, I have been sourcing them from users who decide not to install and let my buy it from them.

Mind I ask what location you are sourcing it from?

Should I change the stall as well? I'm not seriously racing this car, just looking to have the trans manage the power more efficienctly.

I just got my Baumann shift kit in, hopefully I'll be able to firm up the shifts and hold the gears out to around 5000 revs.

DOn't over rev your E cam and springs. You will be happy with the kit. i reccomed you hit at least 700 rpm over stock shift point. Also, since you have 3.73, the shift WILL be early that usual due to the trans not being adjusted for the higher gears.....somehow I missed that earlier i guess.

Since you are keeping the drivline at the same speed, yet changing the rear gears, accualy slowing down the revolution the tire makes - the trans shifts according to hydrolic pressures and rpm of the tailshaft, whoes rpm has not changed.

ANyway, there is more involved, good luck.

Well, I was going to install the kit myself, but I looked at the instructions and said now way. I brought it to several places and the cheapest any of them told me was $300! I even have all the fluids, a new filter and the kit! My personal mechanic friend adjusted the TV pressure, but he didn't put a gauge up to it. At partial throttle it shifts at 2500rpm from 1-2 2-3. It will not shift into over drive until 2500rpms now as well, which means my speedo reads 55mph. I feel like this can't be good for the thing? Should I have him put it back? Should I just bite the bullet and have it put in for the $300?

$300 to install that, ouch. I wouldn't mess with you tv pressure at all. Anyone that will adjust your tv on an aod by feel still has a mistake to learn from. Wonder if he is going to help you at all when your transmission is cooked.
