Greetings -

I have recently migrated form Fox 3 Mustangs to Thunderbirds for the sheer comfort of it all if no other reason. My first find is/was a one-owner, 78K miles 1993 LX with the AOD and in teal with grey leather cloth combo.

Will someone please tell me the real stock horsepower rating and torque/ max torque-rpm values of this 3.8 engine? I have heard so many different versions from Mustangers I don't believe any of them.

Having already gone to true dual exhaust, what are some other basic engine mods that are either bolt on or simple modifications, such as removing the air silencer that I can accomplish.? TIA :confused:

max hp is ussually bout' 150 stock, but with true duals "if they are low restriction cats and muffs." should be bout; 155-160ish at 4500-5000 rpm, I'm not sure about ft.LBS/TQ thou.

stock i believe is 140/215. exhaust would add no more than 5 ponies. check the sticky at the top of this forum for mods. welcome aboard :)

Litning, thats good for a 96-98 but remember we have a redesigned head.

To answer the question, most the dyno's for a pre 96 3.8 put RWHP at around 111Hp.

For mods, I'd acuttly suggest single exhaust, K&N (for the shear economics if no less), remove slincer, and 180 T-stat with pullies. Bit more envolved would be a E-fan conversion, port intake and heads, rockers and cam.
Beyond these are a SC/4.2 Short block and boost,--a N/A block will not take much boost to be of any real use IMO.

Oh and you may find this bit of info/experience intresting a 96 MN-12 will out run a 96 Mustang every day of the week on road conditions. :D

i can think of at least one 3.8 block (stock) taking 20 psi of boost

With stock pistons, rods and such?

Every thing I hear is that the stock N/A is not worth the money to get it to take substianal boost/HP.

Then why does every make such a big deal about using a S/C block for 400hp/Ft-lbs?
By what your saying there is no point to the SC block if the N/A one can handle the power. Now why would Ford spend the extra $$ on the SC if the NA would hold up?

That P/D or Tubro psi?

So then why does everyone scream up and down that you can not make a NA into a SC by just adding the Blower?

please correct me if im wrong but I think its because of the SC blower being a roots type blower and makes its power in the low end of the power band, compared to a vortech which doesnt produce boost untill you get into the upper side of the power band.

The internals just cant handle the low end boost or something to that effect.

Thats exactly the reason. The roots style makes its power right away, while a centrifugal makes boost higher up in the RPM range. Thats why the NA block can hold lots of boost as long as its the right type. Using the roots blower will destroy an NA engine very quickly.

Ya lol. Taking off the air silencer wont give you a huge power gain. But the car will sound alot meaner when you open up the throttle. You could get underdrive pullys as well to free up a few ponies too.

the main reason is NO ONE has tried it, With a headgasket shot I'm willing to bet the N/A bottom end would handle an SC with no issues. I personally think it would be dumb to do so when a Vortech on a stock N/A short block at 11psi would kick the crap out of a stock Supercoupe at the drag strip.
