It appears that shell is experimenting with making synthetic oils out of natural gas now and marketing them through their pennzoil brand. They say the base product is much more pure than that of crude and requires much less refining which keeps costs down. The thing is, I wonder how it compares to the full synthetics they already produce.

Ian, Here is some words I have read up on it .

"Well it's going to be a synthetic level oil, since engineered (hopefully) to have the same length molecules.

The fact it is coming from Gas and being combined into longer molecules, rather than from heavy oil getting cracked into shorter molecules, shouldn't make it any better or worse than other petroleum products."

Time will tell .
