97 4.6 Bird downshifts hard sometimes when I am cruising along about 40 and then let off the throttle to brake. It is always in OD and rpms are about 14-1600, if I remember correctly. Anyone with any similar experience that you have encountered/corrected?

A 1997 TBird doesn't have a TV cable; all shift points, downshifts, etc are controlled by the EEC. These cars use the 4R70W transmission which is TOTALLY computer controlled, only the AOD prior to 1992 used the TV cable.

Well... by design of the early valve bodies (pre-1999), there will be a noticeable sag or hesitation when shifting from 4-3, but typically won't occur at the RPM you observe. It shouldn't downshift into 3rd when decelerating until you drop to about 950 RPM (about 30 MPH).
