Hi, Hawkeye21 here. After some searching, I could only find answers to blue and white smoke. However, my car has black smoek that come sout of the tail pipe when I start up. I'm thinking it's just carbon, but, would anyone know a good way to remedy this problem? Thanks!

Sounds like it's running excessively rich on startup.

You could try cleaning the MAF.

Just cleaned it yesterday. It was filthy, however, there's still a little smoke, although come to think of it, I'm not sure I checked all the way. Is there something else that could cause black smoke. I was thinking the O2 sensors? Oh, and what about black smoke when accelerating quickly? Thanks!

Black smoke=running rich

blue=oil

white=water or coolant (can also be unburned fuel if running extremely rich)

Could be a faulty/leaky injector. O2 sensors aren't used during startup.

Essentially at startup, it's the MAF, TPS, IAC, CTS and injectors. If the CTS is way off, the computer might be commanding too much fuel. If the TPS is off, it could be making the computer think the throttle is open and command more fuel. If the MAF is not reading correctly, lots of things can happen including running too rich. If the IAC is bad, usually there will be high idle or it will stall.

Edit: Another thing that could cause a rich condition is a problem with the EVAP system. If the purge solenoid is stuck open, excess fuel could be added that would cause a slightly rich condition, but I don't think that the minute amount of fuel vapors added would be enough to cause smoke at start-up.

I guess I may have to deep clean the MAF. I started up today and black smoke came out, I mean, it ain;t a large Seafoam type cloud, lol, but just some black smoke from the tail pipe. I cleaned the MAF Sensor, which was terrible gritty, and it helped with the idle, I had one of my fuel injectors replaced and my IAC. As for too much fuel due to the TPS, do you think too much fuel could cause the car to sometimes take longer to turn over? If so, then that would be it. Also, besides the MAF sensor, is there something else which would require cleaning in the MAF, my car could use a good steam clean on the engine, so I'm thinkin that could just be it.

if your 3.8 has the bastard-child obdII like the 94 4.6. there is the possibility of having the eec hanging an injector open. Not sure if that was a 4.6 only problem. I would suspect that or you have a faulty injector. In addition to what was mentioned above.

Did you remove the MAF sensor from the MAF housing and actually clean the sensor wires?

The 94-95 4.6L was the only MN12 to get the early version of OBD II. The 94-95 3.8L NA and SC stuck with OBD I.

Yeap, I used the tutorial and made sure it was the right wires. Got a Qtip, and some rubbing alcohol, dabbed a little on the sensor, then a little on the Q-tip, cleaned it up, in which it was hella filthy, and the idle improved and pick up as well. Oh, I have the 94 3.8, so I guess that'd be OBD 1. Car is pretty much bone stock. Can;t afford enhancements, just keepin her on the road. Do you think it could just be unburned sludge?
