I need new brushes for my Flex-a-Light 180 electric fan

Flex-a-light said I have to replace the entire kit.

Yeah right!!!

I opened it up and it just needs new brushes. My question is does it matter what material the brushes are? I can get harder or softer carbon brushes. Flex-a-Light says they have no idea what brushes they use, and they don't sell any replacement parts.

Is it better to have softer or harder brushes? I was told by someone that the harder brushes will wear down the contact part on the stator to fast, but I don't want to soft of brushes as they will probably last very short.

Any suggestions please?

EDIT:

Here I bought both types of brushes. The lower one is a harder material with a thicker copper wire, the upper one is much softer carbon but with a much smaller copper wire. My original brushes were taken out by my mechanic and put some in like the lower ones.... but he might have put in the wrong kind. Mechanics down here are a nightmare.

And you can see the wear on the stator. I don't know if thats normal?

Anyone have any idea which type of brush is the correct one for this application?
