blowing head gaskets are notorious. also broken motor mounts(oil pan sagging below the cross member). also if the crankshaft pulley is wobbling the crank dampener is on it's way out. that is also pretty common. oh yeah, AOD transmissions SUCK. but i love my car, i really do! new ABS accumulators are $100 and an easy self fix.
yeah the sc is the car you cant live with sometimes and cant live without. Its true that the AOD sucks in these cars, I would get a 94-95 sc. I hope you arent looking for a too dependable car, if you are then stick with the V8. Or an extremely low mileage SC. Yes there are people that have good sc's but you hear about more problems with the sc than the other ones for the mn-12's. But.......I wouldnt buy any other car than an SC. I would go to SCCOA.com and browse the forums for common problems on our cars.
Like they said basicly....Dont forget to turn firm ride on and off to see if its working right, if you turn it off and it flashes in the dash the shock accumlators are sticking or somethings wrong. Also, if you can take it up to highway speed and slow down to like 30 and see if overdrive slips...thats the first thing that likes to go. Also, take it to full throttle all through first and see how much boost its putting out. If its below about 12 the blower has some issues or thiers a vaccum leak somewhere. I would also look in the coolant resvoir, radiator and check the oil for any choc milk shake lookin oil or coolant.
But, if you want this as a daily driver I would suggest a v8, but if its a 2nd car thier fun to have. Good luck, Justin
im shooting to keep my old car.....just making it look like an sc.....i was thinking about an sc but i know they arent very dependable so i dont think i wnana journey into them.....maybe a few years down the road as a 2nd car
Dude, don't be scared. I haven't had a single problem with mine, knock knock. But I have only had it for 9 months. They are too much fun to drive, and can be had pretty cheaply.
edit: oh ya, they handle much better too. A v-8 of similar year t-bird was messing around with me on a curvey road. All of a sudden I hear this awful screaching noise and he about loses it. I was shocked as I could have gone a lot faster around that corner. Maybe just swaybars and better wheels would fix it though.
Just to add my .02 on reliability, I've got 2 '95's. One is my daily driver & has 126k on it. Doesn't burn a drop of oil, nor leak anything. I bought it at 93k, & I've replaced the usual stuff for a higher mileage car: battery, water pump, tires, etc... It's been a very good car, & I intend to keep on maintaining & driving it. I would avoid the earlier ('89-'92') SC's as the ABS brake system on them can be tough to find parts for.
i was looking at a 90 SC with 205k on it......so i think it may have some relibilty problems.....but the headgaskets were done at 145k so im fine there.....and there no other problems with the car......i just dont know if its worth a grand......everything is in working order......and its a 5spd
Just look it over closely, & go with your instincts. Sometimes it's not the mileage as much as how the miles were put on that counts. If it's in good shape & hasn't been driven too hard it's worth a grand.
I don't really know why the SC gets so many dings on the reliabilty scale. I've owned a 1995 for going on the 7th year and almost 50,000 miles and normal maintenance has provided me with what I consider a VERY reliable car. Over that time I've had the radiator replaced (under warranty), replaced the front rotors after warping with crossdrilled ones ($210), cam sensor went bad ($60), power antenna mast ($40), right rear shock was making noise but still worked well so I replaced with Tokico's and Eibachs ($6XX), brake pads (all around) ($?), and engine mounts (were bad) plus transmission mount (wasn't bad but replaced anyway) ($110). Everything plus labor = just under 2K. Divided over 6 years = a little over 300/year. Or divided over 50,000 miles = .04 cents/mile. Not too bad in my book. But, I've not owned anything as long as my car except my motorcycle. Just my .02.
in 7 years with only 50k....thats alot of problems....well my 94 LX V8s repairs all consisted of are 2 tranny flushes....and the regular matience....and no problems anywere close to those kind of problems you had with your sc and only 50k....id get an SC as a 2nd car but i doubt id want one as my only car
No it's not. And my SC had been my only car for 5 out of the 7 years. I would own another SC as my only car in a heartbeat. If you wouldn't, then it's your loss, because I love owning 1 of 574 SC's made that year with a manual transmission. Drive one and you'll see. And what are you considering "those kind of problems"? The only "real" problems that existed (if you read it) that are NOT normal maintenance were the engine mounts, power antenna, and the cam sensor. All together, a little over 200 bucks in parts. That's probably the same price as the head unit you have installed. And if you're looking for a car with 205,000 miles, how dependable do you think it's going to be?
im not looking for a SC anymore i drive alot and i cant ever not have a car....it just seems like thats to much for a car with that little amount of miles thats all im saying...because the 94 at 50k didnt have any problems...i just the V8s are more durable....and the way i drive an SC wouldnt hold up....it would probably be broken every other week
well im not.....im shooting for a 96 sport....i looked for mark 8s for under 5k....couldnt find a good deal on one of them.....i looked for SC's with low miledge for cheap.....couldnt find one of those either.....and all this info on them made me think....ill get one down the road.......to mess around with.........b/c if i had one as a daily driver.....id kill it alot.....and i need 100% dependability.....so the v8 it is...thanks for all the info
So my 92 SC is getting closer to be finished, but right now my dad is in the process of replacing the valve cover gaskets. The intercooler pipes, power steering pump, and alternator have been removed but it still looks like there might barely be enough room to take off the valve cover on the...
I picked up a '90 SC for $300 because the complaint was the trans slipped. The car was used for towing previously and something was said about clutches being welded....turned out trans lines leaked and was low on fluid.
Drives fine in D, OD doesn't work. It only has 1st 2nd and third....a...
Hey there everyone, so my 95 sc when it gets warm and I step on the pedal the car will jerk hesitation like its struggling. But if I let off and drive normal everything is fine. Looking for answers. I already changed the cam position sensor and was told to change the ignition control module now...
I always figured the super coupe was a supercharged v6 until lo and behold on eBay appears a 1 of 50 made 1993 red super coupe with a 5 liter v8! Bill Elliot edition here right out of Georgia! This the only exception or were there more?
