Is it better to bury the filter in the fender or keep it in place of the stock Air Box? I've seen both set-ups and just wonder if theres benefits to a certain set-up? Any input appreciated.

i believe the best set up is put a cone filter in place of the stock box and build a plexiglass or sheet metal heat shield around it, have done it to both of mine and works great

I believe one of the biggest things against burrying the filter in the fender is that with the typical CAI setup, it puts the MAF directly after a 90 degree bend, causing turbulence, which in turn causes the MAF to meter air incorectly......(atleast this has been the argument I've seen against them)

Ideally, I think if you could mount the MAF vertically before the bend (if the wire length allows)...it would be a good setup.

Otherwise, I'd go with the stock airbox or the Cone filter and Heat Shield (and insulate that heat sheild as much as possible).....possibly accompanying it with a "ram air" (no, it's not ram air, but give me a better term :) ) setup to draw cooler air in from down low.

(note, I have done neither mainly because with the roads around here...they have a tendency of flooding and even with the air sliencer I managed to get water right up to the air filter)

Actually I have the ZR Motorsports CAI and if you look the bend is after. The MAC CAI has a bend before. This is one of the reasons I chose this intake.

but does that put the filter in the fender?

For some reason I'm having a hard time imagining that on a car (picturing it)...

Yep. right in front of the wheel. This is a picture of the CAI installed. This is not my car this is from the Blue Tongue website. I would use my car as an example but I'm not sure how to post my pics on this forum. It is a sweet system for anyone looking to purchase a CAI. Just get ahold of Paul at Blue Tongue Motorsports.

Okay...I understand now....
(It's sad...I should know better....I pulled one of those off of a 93 SC here a while ago heping a buddy......)

Yeah.....that'd be a good setup then.....

heh, well I remember looking at the 93 and deciding it was going to be a ***** to get the filter off of it (I mean hey, snow and a flat tire and I gotta go under? heh)...I just didn't remember what the bending setup all looked like.

Actually, now that I think about it....I've got a pic from the tune of you layin under the 89 trying to bolt it up before the tune...heh.

I've had the stock setup w/ K&N panel,the SCP intake w/ the cone under the hood using a cold air box and the ZR w/ the cone in the fender...I prefer the ZR...but that's just me.I think it cleans up the under hood look,that front corner seems very crowded with the filter in there...just don't drive through any lakes,streams,rivers or deep water puddles,lol.

Too bad no one got a pic of us swapping the blower for the tune.
