`93 cougar automatic - i disassembled the center console to find that there is a cable attached to the shifter base assembly. it looks as if the cable is stuck somehow, making it impossible to shift out of park. how can i fix this and how much work is involved?

Check your fuses first. I think that the shift lock is on the same fuse as the stop lights/hazard lights. If neither of those work then it's definately an electrical problem of some sort.

also try looking at your brake pedal sensor. A lot of times these go out and you cant shift.

i checked out the problem closer and was able to jam it into gear. it turns out its not the cable after all--its the piece that holds onto the cable. i pushed on it hard with pliers and it finally snapped outta park (car running of course). once out of park it shifts fine thru all the gears. i'm not so sure i'd be an electrical problem since its not a 4r70w and doesn't have the od switch on the shifter, but i'll check the fuses anyways. for now it looks like i'll just have to deal w/ it & hope someone steals it so i can get some insurance money.....:leftright

Their is a safety interlock that wont let you put it into gear if the brake pedel is not pushed! that is what he is talking about!

thats definatley the problem. Someone else had this problem about 4 months ago where he could just beat the hell outa the button on the shifter and eventually get it to go in. You problem is the switch that tells the shifter the brake is depressed.

easy way to find out is to have someone look to see if your brake lights come on when you hit the brakes.

i had this problem last week. if brake lights dont work, check the fuseable link under the hood, the Fuse Panel fuse was blown, which cut all constant power to the car.

Hope that helped in some fashion.

Hello, I have a 94 T-bird LX (4.6L V8) and it is stuck in park as well. I know this thread is old but just wanted to see if there are any updates. I am on my brakes pretty good, think the brake lights work, but I will check. Need to get it out of park for possible trade of SHO.

Thanks for the help.

Now I understand most have you have figured out the problem about getting your car out of park, but for those of you who have to absolutely drive your car even though your brake lights are (probably) out, here is what you do. My dad works at a ford dealer and he knew an honest mechanic and he gave me this idea. Put your key into the ignition, turn it two notches forward, so that the first one ur console is dark, the second one is dark, but the third (the one you should NOT be at) has the console on. When you are in the second notch, the brake pushing thing is bypassed, so you can step on the brake, shift it into neutral, and start your car.

If this helps anyone please let me know it'd make me feel awesome!

Be sure to hold the brake while u start the car too .. it IS in neutral u kno..
