So yesterday i accidentally left the headlamps on and the battery died. after i got the car jumped it began having issues starting. at first it would let me start it if i was very carful about how far i push the brake but today it just made a whirring noise as if a motor was spinning but not moving anything. at that point i thought my starter was going out so i got ready to tow my car out of the parking lot at work when a co-worker asked if he could try something.

he turned the crank and and it was able to start up. what he told me was that the flywheel(or flexplate i guess since its automatic?) may be missing some teeth so if you turn the crank a little bit it may catch.

i've been looking around for a flywheel replacement but i've heard its a p.i.t.a. to replace. My question is if anyone on here has had the same issue with their mn12? do you have any advice on getting the repair done quickly? at the moment getting to work is a gamble.

Sounds like the armature might have crapped out in the starter.

Got it into the shop and it turned out to be the flexplate. When I bought the car I couldn't figure out what the grinding/scraping noise underneath my car was. i thought it might have been a belt or the driveshaft but i think it was the flexplate making the noise because the problem started after the grind/scrape noise went away. O'reilys wanted around $73 for the flexplate but they said they'd price match rock auto. so maybe they'll drop it to the $25 i found online. labor was around $300 since i didnt have the tools to do it myself. my arms are still sore from having to turn the pulley by hand to line up the teeth and get it started but doing that saved me the two $50 charges the towing company wanted to tow it across town.

edit: mechanic claims its the starter also :/

You could pull the starter and have someone spin the crank while you look at the flexplate teeth (unplug the coil!!). If they're broken then replace the flexplate. If they're fine, replace the starter while it's already out.

got it back from the shop. replaced the flexplate and the starter both. Now when i accelerate from a stop i hear a low rattle in the middle of the car. i think it might be the driveshaft

Bring it back! Must be something they did or forgot do when they changed the flexplate and the starter. Did they drop the tranny to get at the flexplate?

I would imagine so I dropped one to change the torque converter without pulling the drive shaft, and that was no easy feet. I personally would not suggest that anyone ever try it, it was crap and took 3 times longer than it should have. However lesson learned, don't be f-ing lazy.

But I agree with Joe, it's probably something the shop did or didn't do that's causing your issue now.
