Just another data point for the forum and other fellow newbies. I had a SEL and was given codes for both banks, both O2 sensor heaters something or other. Anyway, replaced the PCM based on forum research. Needless to say, nor more SEL! Oh yeah. Now I can go for PA inspection.

Next mission, replace the leaking radiator. While I’m at it, going to do t-stat and water pump. Bring on some warm weather.

If anyone wants the codes that were pulled, I can post. Just don’t have the paper close at the moment.

Well, that success was short lived. That yellow mutha is back on mocking me. Guess I’ll shoot the codes and if it’s a new thing or the old. I think that this is going to be a contest between the two of us. Argh.

I'm more interested in which EEC failed; what was the 4-digit code on it?

Not likely. I haven't replaced them as of yet. Mileage is just over 83k.

There seems to have been multiple solutions to addressing this issue. The most common cure seemed to be the PCM. That's the direction I went. Other "fixes" were fuel filter and others that I don't recall offhand.

My thinking is to pull the codes again to see if anything new is being thrown. Then, I'm not sure. I do have a weeping radiator, so that needs to be changed. I have that in the garage along with a water pump and t-stat. Was going to do it this weekend, but the weather is not cooperating.

Any other suggestions on a strategy would be welcome!

If it is throwing codes for O2 sensor heater circuits, that is pretty much always either the O2 sensors themselves, or wiring that fell down and melted on the exhaust. I have never seen O2 sensor heater codes codes caused by a failed PCM on any car, let alone a Tbird. Pretty much the only PCM failure that our cars are at all prone to is the 94 4.6 cars hanging an injector open. Get the car up in the air and inspect the O2 sensors and the wiring going to them. If the sensors haven't been changed recently, replace them. Even apart from the heater codes, they do lose effectiveness over time and will not respond as quickly as they did when new.

According to my list FTE1 is the one that fails in the 97 cars; mine quit shifting correctly, and replacing it fixed it.

Must have been a bad batch.

I always keep this in the back of my head now...

I also have a failing LJC1, not for o2's but for intermittent loss of spark during cranking. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a good LJC1 pcm eventually.

Well, the plot thickens....... The couple that I bought the car from live in my neighborhood. After buying Marguerite (I named her that after watching a Trailer Park Boys segment and her having a leaking radiator), I helped them out on a couple of around the house things to thank them for selling me the car. Anyhow, since the husband couldn't drive anymore, but still loved the car, he would run it once a week. Apparently, one day he felt like more than just letting it idle and warm-up and popped it into gear with some throttle and put it partway through the garage wall into their living room! There is nothing bent or really messed up, but I know why I put a new radiator in this weekend!

Unfortunately, that little mutha of a yellow light is still taunting me. I am glad that she came clean on the oops through the garage as that may help identify what is causing the light to continue to ruin my days.

Since I had the radiator out, I would up putting in a new water pump and thermostat..... because if I hadn't, sure enough something would've gone haywire and I would be doing it sooner or later anyway.
