Wow, and those shafts look mean compared to the MN12's. Does the 03 pumpkin bolt in the same as our 8.8?

Hmmm....... :)

If we can use their halfshafts, we can use their upgraded aftermarket versions and, since I personally plan on swapping to mustang bolt pattern, i can swap to 31 spline. And the centersection is similar, but the mounting methods and mounting points are entirely different. But other than that, the gears and anything important relating to the differential is the same. Apparently the axles are the same in length, which I believe to be the most important part and the ends appear similar. As long as th axle shaft doesn't rub the rear upper control arm at full compression, everything should be splendid.

I purchased a 2003 Cobra center section and it fits exactly the same as a Tbirds. I only had to change out the side gears and the pinion flange.

it mounts to the rear of the differential the same???? i could have sworn that the mounting method was different on the cover. The front's the same, that i knew, but i thought the rear was completely different.

no, those mount really weird...

and according to the site, if the halfshafts are the same length, you don't need to swap bolt patterns, as they are 28 spline on the hub side! cool.. hmm.. ideas ...

Acording to what I read, we could use the 03 Cobra pumpking and its half shafts by only switching the pinion flange. Is this how you guys understand it since the shafts are the same length, and 28 splines on the wheel end?

Look closely at the Half-shafts. You will notice that although the MN12 and Cobra may have the same length overall, the Cobra parts are shorter.

In the link he says he has to have the halfshafts cut to length, so apparently they are different enough so we can't use them.

yeah, but if you get aftermarket 03 halfshafts, it would be trivial to ask for a different length shaft compared to the innumerable things otherwise that could be different and would make use/modification difficult. length is an easy change.if that's all that's different, then a swap shouldn't be difficult.

This isn't new information. The cobra shafts are shorter by a little bit and can't be used. It would cost as much to modify a set of 03 cobra shafts (after you bought a set and modified them) as if you just got Raxles. You could also talk to GKN about making some HD shafts which they will do. I think Mike is running his 10.9s on the stock axles, so I don't think they are too bad of a piece. Even though he is running an automatic and that makes things a little easier instead of 5/6 speed.

Anyone who has installed the frpp pumpkin with 3.73s and traction lok should know the pumpkins are identical to the cobras, because thats what the frpp catalog lists them under. And the half shafts will not work. Get in touch with The Driveshaft Shop-theyre on the web. They have stage II and V half shafts. I think thats what they call them, but they are very similar to their cobra upgrades.

I have a set of cobra shafts and a set of SC shafts loose in the garage.
setting them right next to each other, the cobras are visibly shorter.

Also, with respct to "Ideas": Don't screw with yours. :) The only thing that the cobra has on us is the upper A arm being slightly stiffer. The MN12 and the IRS it has were developed at the same time, they were ment for eachother.
The cobra IRS is a hack. Ford required it to bolt into the car with no modification, to save cash. It's a good-as-it-gets IRS kit for a 79 Fairmont, be happy with your MN12. :)
