Back in October, I had a new passenger side hub and bearing installed, had a mark viii single piece aluminum driveshaft installed, and all was fine, for about a week.

One day, getting on the freeway, I hear a loud clunk from the rear suspension of the car, and from that point forward a very slight knocking from the rear of the car when going over bumps, also occuring when pulling out of a driveway, if there was any sort of "drop" onto the surface of the road, example, the front wheels drop down onto the road, get a clunk from the rear of the car, then, when the rear of the car drops down onto the surface of the road (we're talking about like, very slight drop, pulling from an entrance to a shopping center onto the road, if those two surfaces aren't totally level, for example) there will be a clunk again from the rear.

Also, when taking off from a stop, under normal to moderate acceleration, there will be this very strange knocking sound from the rear of the car, this is on FLAT roads that are in good shape, not the same knock sound as going over bumps, this is a strange sound I have never heard before. Hard to descibe.

-Rear swaybar endlinks and their bushings are intact, tight, and look and feel fine
-Rear swaybar mounts to the body are intact, tight, greased, and look fine.
-all bolts, related to suspension, and rear end as well as drive shaft are present, are tight, and look normal.
-nothing appears to be rubbing on anything else

However, the knocking has been getting more and more pronounced. Also, there is a vibration around 70MPH that seems to shake from the front of the car to the back of the car, this has been getting progressively worse.

I DID NOT have the driveshaft balanced, just took a chance on it being right, and I DID NOT have new u-joints installed, they felt nice and tight, with that said, this vibration was not present initially, this all started after whatever it was in the rear went "boom"

Arent there u-joints in the halfshafts under the boots? I looked it up at work, and there appears to be a "service kit" for the joints, but it is quite pricey, I have seen entire halfshafts advertised from places such as napa, carquest, etc. that aren't badly priced, thoughts on that?

I am not looking for all out performance (raxles) or anything like that, just stock keep it going down the road running good, reliable, etc.

thanks

First off you NEED new u joints on the drive shaft; the old ones are probably stock and I bet most of the vibrations are coming from this. Balancing the drive shaft would also be a good idea and help lower the vibrations, it's also normally recommended before installing a new driveshaft but that's up to you. As far as the clunking in the axles I have no clue, maybe they have gone bad but my guess is bushings. I would get under there again an double check them

My axles go "click" when going from reverse to drive and vise-versa. I have a pair of new axles from advance for this. They are going in when i build the new rear. I don't think that's what your problem is. Keep us posted on what you find out! It would be cool to look at it sometime if it becomes more annoying and elusive! We could put it on one of my lifts!

Check the bolts on the pinion flange. If you didn't use loctite, they could've come loose.

I had the same clunk as you're describing. I replaced the half shafts, didn't help. I ended up replacing the rear lower control arm to frame bushings and the toe link compensators and that fixed it.
