If any of the boots are ripped, then replace the arm. If there is play in any of the joints, then replace the arm.

Its really a job that just about anybody can do in their driveway. I took it to my buddies shop he replaced the two lower control arms in 20 minutes. A lift sure makes it easier though.

Get the alignment checked after for sure.

Pictures of an upper and lower control arm?

Just turn your wheels all the way in one direction, and look at the spindle assembly. The upper control arm is a wishbone shaped piece that attaches to the upper arm of the spindle. The lower control arm attaches to the bottom of the spindle assembly, and your lower shock bolt goes thru the lower control arm also.

The upper control arm comes with a ball joint already installed.

If you are going to swap it yourself, you should buy an 18mm Craftsman ratcheting wrench, with the angled ends. This will make it very eay to remove the bolt on the firewall side of the shock tower.

Sounds like the Shop you went to gave you an incorrect diagnosis.

I mentioned to you what to do via a PM.

Before you replace anything further, follow my two suggestions in the PM.

One area to check would be the tension arm, where it passes thru the lower control arm.

Here's what my PM suggested;

I would suggest you do one of two things;

1. Remove the wheel from that side of the car, and rest the frame on a jack stand.
Take a pry bar, and try to exert force on the various suspension components, as if you were trying to force the ball out of the socket (for example). You should be able to detect movement IF that joint is worn.

2. Take the car to a different shop and get a second opinion. If the two opinions match, then your all set.

Let me know how you make out.

Thanks rollingthunder. See I just got Got again. The dam car didnt even need the upper control arm. I took it to another shop just a minute ago like you said and another opinion. The reason its making that noise is because I need a strut mount on one side, they said i mite as well get the strut also. Plus i need the tension arm bushing for both side like you said but i dont need them majorly. The money i just spent on that control with tools i could of bought the strut and the mount for about the same price. Thanks alot. Maybe you should be my mechanic lol!!!!!

Did you check the tension arm bushings yourself. You can check those by hand.

As far as the strut mount, did they show you what was wrong with it?

Hope this Shop is a place that you know you can trust............

Well 94cougar, if the boots on your control arms looked like the picture above, it wasn't money wasted. They were due anyway.
