couple questions

ok, before i get into this i know the money factor of this whole thing and all the work that will have to go into it.. i have a 1990 base tbird, but im compltely redoing it.. starting on the outside then the interior, then wheels. i have an aftermarket exhaust that will accomdate this sort of thing as well... putting a 99+ gt motor, a t45, 93 mark8 driveshaft, and 3.27 traklok or maybe 3.55s...

this is a little down the road (like almost a year), but i just want to clear up a few things before i try to do any of it...

1. will the 99+ gt motor clear the stock hood? (if not then ill get a mach 1 hood)
2. will a manual trans from a gt fit?

i know i need the computer, wiring harnesses, accesories, a sc manual center console to accomdate the manual, the clutch pedal assembly from a sc and the slave cylinder, a new pumpkin, and a lot of time and patience..

reason for wanting to do this is, i havent heard of many people doing it, and its a lot of power to start with. and i know i can get the motor for about a grand around here, ive looked before when i was about to buy a '96 that needed a motor (otherwise great condition for $1100) but someone beat me to it... -greg

1. yes
2. no

the shifter needs to be moved back a little bit. youll need to have some parts machined for that. otherwise the shifter will be right underneath your radio.
is there a manual that will bolt up to the 4.6 and the shifter be about where it should be? -greg
unfortunately, no. theres a tech article about this swap, PapaJohn did a really good write up on it. it has alot of useful information in it. check it out
thanks, i completely forgot about that article.. -greg
With a 1990 bird dont forget to get a new ECC with that engine and trans....
If the 1990 V8s were all 5.0, have you compared building upa 5.0 motor instead of trying to do the 4.6 route? (not bashing, I'd love to do that to my 95 bird) Just thinking about money. Just thought it'd be easier and a bit cheaper to make it all fit.
im thinking about that as well... if i did a 5.0, i would have a t5 and 3.27s in back... however, the thing with the 4.6 is i dont know of anyone whos done that to the 89 - 93 birds so itd be unique, plus the i know that i can get a motor for jsut over a grand with low miles and thatd be a nice hp number to start out with. but depending how easy and cheap i can get things, but my final decision wont be for a while... cause if i get a 5.0, chances are im going to get it from a wrecked stang or bird and im going to rebuild it with a new cam, new low end, new heads, stiffer springs, stronger rods, port and polish the intake manilfolds, heads, and headers. basically whichever way i go its going to be a fast car. oh, with a t5 tranny, i am going to need a different driveshaft, right? -greg
I don't know much about 5.0, T-5s, or the 89-93 TBird driveline but I do know this. 5.0 parts are quite a bit cheaper than 4.6 parts, but if you've got the money, I say go for the 4.6 and the T-45. Unique would the best thing about it. cost would be the worst. :(
6 speeds

Are there any 6-speed transmissions that will fit? How much harder would it be to install? It can't be too different if it fits a Mustang.

6 speed?

Umm... well, you spend an extra grand for that one gear that doesn't really do much....... I would think its not worth it.
well. i think this is what im going to do, finish everything interior and exterior on my car. then do a shift kit, then put 3.27s on back in a 8.8 w/ traklok.. then put in a rebuilt and built up 5.0 motor, run it as it is and save up for the 5 spd swap for when my transmission dies. the transmission only has 50,000 on it and is a Jasper re-man that seems to hold up better than the stock fords, so it could last a while (*knocks on wood*), but who knows... -greg

there were no v8 birds in 90, they were 91 - 93 with the 5.0, but stangs had the 5.0 in 90.. but i think im going to hunt down a 5.0 bird in a junk yard and take its motor and accesories and computer. -greg

If you find a sport model you might not want to take its engine.... you might want to take the whole car and fix it up... (not too too many sports where made)

Oh, cool! That would make for en even sweeter 4.6 swap. Whichever you choose to do, good luck with it!
