I have a 97 Cougar XR7 8cyl. The other day it started running rough. The next day the check engine light came on. I had the code read and it has several "Cyl. 3 misfires".

My questions:

Which cylinder is # 3 ( I bought a plug to replace )?

If it is the plug, what could cause it to go bad (their about 2-3 years old)?

If it's not the plug, what else could it be (Besides the plug wire)?

Thanks for any help!

Well, you kinda posted this in the wrong section, so maybe a mod can move this later. But to answer your question, cylinder #3 is the third one back from the front of the engine on the passenger side. If I were you, I wouldn't replace just one single plug. There's just a lack of balance to the engine. It could be the plug, but I would suspect that it is the plug wires or the coil pack. How old are the plug wires and how many miles do they have on them?

Plugs are about 4-5 years old

My plugs and wires are about 4-5 years old. There's maybe 40,000 miles on them. I put in good quality plugs nad wires when I did them.

Thanks for the info on which plug is #3. Hopefully I will get a chance to look at it tonight.

Thank again!
