Just finished watching the NHRA in St. Louis, my condolences go out to his family and all of Joe Amato Racing. Joe lives ~30 mins away and he's our hometown boy, so it hits pretty hard. Keep him and his family in your prayers.

I grew up as a fan of Joe's. After he retired his racing helmet and picked up the owner's hat I became a quick fan of Darrell's. I will tell you though, it wasn't hard to root for the guy. He was great to watch and had a wonderful personality that portrayed well thru the TV camera that we fans watch the racers though. I was lucky enough to be at Columbus to see his last win and standing at the fence near the starting line as Joe walked over to hop in the team vehicle with a smile from ear to ear made my year as a fan of Amato Racing. I will keep Darrell along with his family and crew in my thoughts and prayers.

Later,
jay

EDIT:Here is a quick news story about it

MADISON, Ill. (AP) - Drag racer Darrell Russell died Sunday after his car broke up and burst into flames during a Top Fuel race at Gateway International Raceway.

The 35-year-old driver had just lost to Scott Kalitta in the second round of eliminations at the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals when his dragster came apart while running about 300 m.p.h at the end of the quarter-mile strip.

Russell was unconscious when he was removed from the wreckage and taken to the St. Louis University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about two hours later.

Russell is the first participant to be killed in competition at an NHRA national event since Blaine Johnson died in a crash during a qualifying run in the 1996 U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.

Sunday's event continued after a 45-minute delay.

Russell, the 2001 NHRA rookie of the year, had six career Top Fuel victories, including the Pontiac Excitement Nationals two weeks ago in Columbus, Ohio.

In his 2001 season, he became the third driver in NHRA history to win in his first start

That was a very scary wreck to watch as you would imagine based on the result of it. Its amazing how fast we went from Darrell and Joe celebrating a victory at the last race to no one celebrating anything this passed weekend.

Is there anything more about the wreck? Pictures or video? I started watching just after the wreck, then got distracted and never caught anything more on it. All I've seen now is just saying that he crashed just past the finish line in Round 2.

There was a short article in the local paper Monday, but said the same as what I've already seen.
