My 94 4.6 will detonate under full throttle when it is hot outside. It will do it even with 91 octane fuel. I hooked up my scanner and it shows it retarding the timing . What gives any ideas

perhaps u have alot of carbon buildup in ur combustion chambers, try using a top end cleaner such as seafoam. I used it on my own and produced an unbelievable amount of smoke.

BTW... this is a bit off topic, but how does the 4.6 detect detonation inorder to pull timing??? I thought the mn-12 2 valves dont have knock sensors?

ditto that, i thought the knock sensors were physically omitted from 4.6l MN12's and those variables are disabled in the ecm software as well.

So why is it retarding the timing? I don't think that's directly related to the detonation being detected?
